Need Carbon Clincher Recommend (1k budget)
Hi All,
I finally saved up for some new wheels and I have 1k to spend. Can I get a recommendation for the best bang for the bucks carbon clincher? At the moment I'm leaning toward Boyd 50mm because I heard good things about Boyd. I weight 190lbs and currently riding a 2011 Tarmac Expert with stock Fulcrum 4 I think. Any recommendations would be helpful since this is my first time buying wheels.

well you just missed the sales for reynolds DV3k on cc for $850. Don't think you can go wrong with Boyds as they get nice reviews and can add more spoke counts for us larger guys.

This would be for everyday ride since I don't race at all. I think those DV3K deals are still floating around but I was hesitate on that deal because I thought the 50mm Boyd wheel is a better wheel? There was a deal on the Zip 404 for 1300 a while back but at that time I do not have the cash for them.

All wheels mentioned here are reasonable.
I ended up with Williams 38 depth because I only weigh 145 and I figured 58 would be too deep.
I highly recommend them. Even PCAD likes them!
Also send email to BF member PSIMET for custom options but I don't know if he can do custom carbon for a grand, doesn't hurt to ask!

I just emailed Boyd about the 50mm and 58mm. Any performance different between 50mm and 58mm? the price is the same.

I have Reynolds DV3K that I ride daily. They are pretty bulletproof. I crashed into the back of a car that swerved into the bikelane and slammed on his brakes - minor truing and they were fine. I went down around a slippery corner and a ~190lb rider behind me rode over the front wheel - zero damage, not even a scuff. Weight is awesome, spin-up is quick and they are fast on descents.

This is an excellent 1500 gram carbon clincher for the money...

Honestly carbon clinchers for everyday riding are all risk and almost no benefit in my mind--and I own a really, really nice pair of carbon clinchers. It's not that they spontaneously combust or anything, but if you're not racing against a clock or other riders, all you're doing is making that one-in-a-million pothole strike a lot more expensive. And sacrificing some wet weather braking performance.

Not much risk with the DV3K - if you are concerned you can buy the two-year damage protection plan for $250.

I also own a set, and I agree with DrPete. Also they can overheat on steep technical descents, which I do a lot of. I've had a tire blow off the rim because it overheated. I use them for races- only one race I know of has a descent gnarly enough that I won't use carbon clinchers on it.
