A not-so-happy Cervelo S5 owner

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sounds a lot like what my LBS (a Cervelo dealer) has seen as well.

Edit: well I typed that early in the video...maybe not that bad but they have seen flaws in the finish of EVERY Cervelo they have gotten since becoming a dealer about a yea and a half ago.

Couldn't stand to watch through. Did he show any close ups? Did he try to get a replacement/refund?

wow, ive never seen such a wavy unprofessionally made carbon frame as shown in the photos toward the end of the video. The knock offs Ive seen from China are even better. It looks like it was built by someone with zero experience and used the frame for practice. Im wondering why Cervelo would not exchange the frame.

My old P2 never looked like that. Looks to me like this one truly was a dud, and the rep he emailed/spoke with just used the "slight cosmetic imperfections are normal" line. Definite customer service fail regardless.

I would be kind of pissed if I bought that frame. Sounds like their customer service blows too.

FTFY as I have no idea what "ass" looks like. Which could beg the question: how does something look like "ass"?

Cervélo has made some great designs and some of the best winning frames over the years. However, given the attention this video has gotten since December I would dare say something bad has happened to their quality control. I have a 2011 S3 that is flawless and one of my favorite bikes. Maybe they changed their factory in Taiwan for 2012?

As far as their customer service goes, from my own experience, it depends how you handle it. His local dealer should have gotten with Cervélo to get that frame replaced NQA without involving the customer.

Psh. Those aren't flaws, they're merely representations of the hand built nature of the frame. It's like the signature of the artisan who finely crafted that frame. You should have to pay extra for that kind of attention to detail.

/sarcasm

High zoot consumers expect high zoot CS. Lesson learned for Cervelo. QC and poor CS reputations are hard to shake.

lol.

honestly, the whole bit about the graphics, the boss paint, the dropout sanding, etc. is much ado about nothing. the waviness is certainly odd - a frame shouldn't be doing that. i can understand people getting upset, but i would probably just ride it that way.

Yeah, lots of it is nitpicky, but the waviness and the weird looking cable stop are pretty bad.

I do not understand where did he purchased this "bad" frame.

Does Cervelo sell the frames directly? I believe only though certified retailers. If this is the case, he should take it back to the retailer, and not to Cervelo directly. He does not really have to talk to Cervelo, only to the people who took his money.

However if he did not purchased it at certified LBS, where else? eBay?
This video lacks some important facts, imho.

on the cable stop - i have an old soloist team that has the removable external plastic cable stop. it almost looks like that exact same plastic stop was layed up with the carbon fiber. how do the stops look on your p2? smooth transition?

That video could have just been the pictures and I think it would have gotten the point across just as well.

However, the response from Cervelo is really disheartening. The early 2010 R3's had cracks in the bottom bracket, whether it was just cracking paint or cracking carbon, every account I read said Cervelo did whatever they could to make the customer happy. I'm a proud and very satisfied owner of a '10 R3 but if this is the new direction they're taking under PON, they're not going to be around much longer.

I can't really see the issues with it except for the waviness .
