$1400-1600 Entry Level Race Bike?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

$1400-1600 Entry Level Race Bike?

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a decent bike to start racing for 2012.

I was originally looking at the 2012 Cervelo S2 and RS ($2600-2800 marked down to $1600-1800 for January 2012) with SRAM Force. Totally missed out on the deal but am looking for something in that price range.

I was hoping to find 2011 CAAD 10's (with 105) for great markdowns but only found a few 2011 105 CAAD10s for $1499 here in NYC/LI/NJ. 2012 105 CAAD 10s can be had for $1560-1600. In 2011 in Northern CA, multiple LBS's were selling the 2011 105 CAAD 10 for ~$1200.

I was expecting to find 2011 105 CAAD10s now for under $1200....Is this a pipedream? Anyone know of any "good" deals for $1400-1800?

I'm located in NYC.

Many thanks!

craigslist. on my local one (actually just an hour away from sf) is a 1400 CAAD 10 with full rival (no fsa cranks) for 1400. There are deals to be had.

If you're going to let $300. stand between you and a great entry-level race bike like a CAAD10, then you should settle for "less". NYC? You can find good deals. I got my CAAD9 brand new for $750. when it was selling for $1,000. You just have to put in some leg work and find the deal. It is what it is. If you can't get it for less than $1500 and you think that's too much, don't buy it. That $300 difference isn't going to change the performance of the bike.

Geez, I saw one on Craigslist in Rockland go for $1000 used with shoes, computer, bottles, cages, upgraded Saddle AND pedals. Granted, it was used and the buyer got no warranty, but there are deals to be found like I said.

+1 for CAAD. Even if you have to pay closer to MSRP.

Come on man, did you really try?
I came up with a new CAAD10-5 for $1275 in less than 60 seconds.

As long as you like black and a size 50 or 56 works...

2ndGen! Thank you for this!!

I pretty much just called up like 20 LBS's close to me. Apparently I suck at the internet =(((

How did you find tread's deal?

Edit: Doh! they're out of my size (52cm labeled, 53.5cm Effective top-tube length)

I knew they only had a 50 and a 56 (my size is 56cm ), so I knew that there'd be a chance that they might not have your size, but I posted it anyway to give you a little hope and some encouragement.

Shucks, you can walk into an LBS and just talk to they guys and let them know you're really interested and are ready to pull the trigger, but not at MSRP or close to it. Walk in there on a Tuesday or Wednesday when it could be barren and they are starvin for a sale! Let THEM convince you to buy a bike.

Me? If I were going to get a new CAAD10-5, I'd gladly pay $1400 for it, get fitted, and ride it and not think about it once that I could've gotten it for $200 less if I waited a month or a season or I mail ordered it or whatever. Once your "on" the bike, it won't matter.

FTR, that's what I did. I let some salesmen know I was ready to pull the trigger at a certain price.
One day, I got a call from one of them, they told me they had something for me and I ended up
getting a brand new 2009 Trek 1.5 for even less than a 2008 model and it was still 2008 when I
bought it!

I don't want to sound like Tony Robbins, but you gotta make it happen!

"Call for availability"

Look, I love my CAAD and I'm all for others obtaining one at a good price. In theory, the deals are out there, but in reality that's not the case. Especially these days.

I got mine (2011 model) in September for $1275 + local tax. I shopped online before I pulled the trigger, and it turned out that I really couldn't do better than the price I got at my LBS. And I got my color and my size. Don't think anybody's gonna get close to that on a 2012, and the 2011's are as scarce as hen's teeth, hence the limited sizes and colors, if available at all. Best hope is probably to get a hundred or 2 off of a 2012, which would put you at $1470 (MSRP $1670 per Cannondale website).

Hope you can find one in your size or sometimes the dealers will know of one in stock
at another shop and be able to locate it for you and have it delivered to their shop.
(that's how I got my Trek)

Good luck.

I just found (2) $1275. CAAD10-5's (one in 56 and the other a 50).
But then again, 56 is the most common size. OP needs a 52.

comptechgsr,

Just a little inspiration for you... Score!

Go check out one of those 50's if you can. See if they might be able to fit you for it. TT for 50cm CAAD10 is 52.5.
(remember, a 50 in one manufacturer could be bigger or smaller with another manufacturer).

REI has them (not on sale) for $1350. if you join their annual membership club and in your size.

And, don't rush it...part of the fun is the hunt!

If you're looking for a race geometry bike around $1500, you aren't going to find much better than Rossetti.
