Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hate Target, but I know you all have Target out there. Get it at Target... they'll be unthreaded, and it'll take about a cartridge and a half to fill up your tire, but at the same time, you can get like 25 in a box for like 15 Aust dollars (I think).

Uuuuh, this guy is from Australia, Target (or the like) is NOT what you guys have over there. We can't buy guns from the corner store like you can.

Big W may have something in the camping section.

Funny isn't it? since the Aussie Thread has been moved, there has been almost (absolutely was there first but thanks climbo for biting on the previous post) no interest in this question from the Australians. It's taken two American residents to provide answers, which may or may not be correct.

One solution, jan, is to do a bike ride around all the bike shops and all the shopping centres in Sydney to find the cheapest source. And a really, really cheap long-term solution is to use a TYRE PUMP!!!! Zefal make a nice, high-pressure job, the HPX for probably the same price as a box of cartridges.

As a by-the-by, I really hope you don't ever reveal that you ride a $5,000 road bike (if you in fact do own one). In which case I would call you something starting with "w" for being so mean on the price of CO2 cartridges and/or tyre pumps) while spending so much a bike.

Got it, yes, that's why I put in the smiley face.

BB guns still make you blind when it goes in your eye, that's why they are illegal here. And usually it's kids without a licence shooting native animals and people, that's why we don't want them here.

thanks everyone for your quick replies. I had checked out big w but to my disappointment they put me on to auto one. after iridebikes' suggestion i rang up the local (sydney cbd) gun store to find they supply them at aud$16 for 5. that sounds reasonable.Rowan, to answer your question i have just started road cycling after finding 'spin' classes so enjoyable. i got my hands onto a 2nd hand Raleigh 12 speed, 105 shimano gear bike with riding shoes for AUD$185.

I have a frame pump that takes some work getting past the 85 psi mark. I have noticed that ppl are suggesting floor pumps but i thought i'd go for an lazy solution that will accompany my frame pump on rides.

You know, there WILL be a day when you run out of CO2 cartridges on the side of the road, in pouring rain, with a replacement tube that also gets a puncture real quick. You never run out of the ability to pump up a tyre. Even 85psi (or shock-horror, 45psi) on a road tyre is acceptable to get you home or, if you really insist, to a service station. If you have presta valves, an adaptor would be handy to carry in that case.

Do a search. I am pretty confident you will find stories of people who have relied on CO2 cartridges and have regretted it.

NEVER dismiss a floor pump. I'd rank it with... well... I can't find another tool I can rank it with for convenience, ease of use and outcome.

And, don't fear. You've got the bug. Get the lot now rather than wait for us to say: We told you so.

I always had the problem of pumping up tyres pass the 80PSI mark until I bought the Sigma handpump which convert to a little track pump and pump all the way to 110 PSI no problem what so ever.So I would advise anyone to get one of this pump from REBEL STORE nearby.

I also would never use them -- I have a Zefal HPX frame pump which goes up to 180psi.........................if you're strong enough.

But......I'm sure I've seen the cartridges at John Kennedy's shop in Black Rock, Melbourne. 03 9589 3399

I have ridden with CO2 cartridges exclusively for at least 15 years now--with zero problems and super-fast tire changes. There's no way in hell I'd ever go back to a frame pump of any kind.

Go back and read my posting. It said I might be back after a bit of a break from the stupidity often seen overflowing here. So, there is nothing inconsistent in my posting a couple of times again. But worry not, it will be far less than in times past. (And comments such as yours is why this place sucks at times. I have come to seriously doubt many here can read and comprehend. And yes, I've come back not nearly as nice. I've decided to be like the vast majority of all others here. Thanks for the warm welcome, a__whole.)

In California a BB gun (or pellet gun) is the same as a handgun by legal definition. A sidearm that shoots a projectile. I learned this the hard way.

Climbo, when I move back to the states, I'll be shipping all sorts of gear to you guys.

so what? pencils aren't MADE for shooting. Most people realise that. Anything can be a weapon so what's your point?

you just made my point. something's wrong when you start putting the blame on an inanimate object, wouldn't you say? rocks can't throw themselves, you know...

one more thing -- lighten up, dude.

I've never heard of a little kid finding his dad's unlocked pencil and shooting his neighbor. Hollywood doesn't glamorize pencils and rock throwing either. Hardly anyone has ever robbed a store with a rock or a pencil. Of course, over here the syringe seems to be the weapon of chice.

Paintball guns used co2 catridges at one time. Don't tell me they are banned in Australia?

blame the gun for dad's ignorance? blame hollywood because you can't think for yourself? people get robbed at knife point, and a 34" 36oz. baseball bat will do more damage than a whole lot of guns will -- it's silent and you never have to reload it.

maybe they should outlaw syringes...

and french toast.
