Then, looking at how gorgeous the paint job is, I'd be afraid to ride the thing. Well, maybe not ride it, but I'd be afraid to put it in the back of my truck. Maybe I'll buy my Ti bike and watch for a deal on a Colnago that I can build up over time, then only ride it under the right conditions. It's just too purdy to scratch!

This is essentially my 5th road bike(2 other road, a cross/touring, and a track which sees more road than track.), so I'm trying to take it slow and only get good deals on the components. If anybody sees any record calipers on ebay for a good price, come shout at me. Same goes for a modern-ish front record hub.

Nothing new, but I drug it into the kitchen to get some glamor shots.

That's not its front wheel, just a track wheel I had sitting around.

Mutts are the best.

clausen 03-04-12 05:43 PM

Nice frame

Paint code is LX14, Columbus Airplane aluminum, 2004-06ish if I remember correctly.

veggie 03-04-12 06:06 PM

I knew the tubing and color code. The seller thinks it was a 2002.

vladvm 03-05-12 08:18 AM

just wondering because i thought aluminum has limited fatigue life of 5 years.

stinkyclimber 03-05-12 08:34 AM

Someone notify Boeing - there must be a pile of airplanes about to crumble and fall out of the sky!

Srlsy, have not heard that and can't imagine it being true. Certainly, no one told that to my AL bike!

Depends on how many grand tours the op is thinking of riding per year. I have a 2005 aluminum that is super stiff, dented, scraped etc and shows no signs of any fatigue whatsoever. I plan to race the crap out of it this summer with no reservations.

Very nice looking Colnago. The newer ones just don't have that personal touch of having unique paint schemes, but I won't give mine up. Ever think about having the fork painted to match the frame?

Then I know a lot of people with a lot of bikes that need to be trashed, even my newest aluminum bike, an '04 should be according to that.

No, but i would like to have a fork that says Colnago on it, the previous previous owner decided to srtip it

I really like mine (a 2003 model, way past its shelflife!) and done a lot of miles on it. Truly a fine frame both in ride and craftsmanship.

return of the tank wheels. i had some 40mm 2200g plus wheels myself. i dont not use them now.

veggie 03-05-12 12:56 PM

That looks great!

kraftwerk 03-05-12 06:18 PM

I've got a Lux Ti, which I believe is a 2003. It has a similarly psychedelic paint job in blue and silver. Mine also has carbon stays which is a nice touch... but seriously those painters must have shrooms in their cappuccino or something.

Great frames! Like the general wacky-ness, yet traditional geometry.
sheesh for 10 yrs old it looks brand new!

My pictures probably make it look better than it actually is.

jischr 03-05-12 08:33 PM

I bought a 2001 Dream with an AD10 paint job with full DA 9-spd for a hair under $1,000 last year so you got a very good deal. I bought it in part for the paint. There just aren't any production bikes out there that come close to the paint on the Nags. Turns out to be a great ride and my prior road bike only gets used on the rollers now. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

veggie 03-05-12 11:09 PM

I definitely will!

veggie 03-22-12 10:16 PM

Bad news. The frame sat hanging from the ceiling with little to no attention after I bought it(aside from these few pictures), I recently went over it and discovered two things. 1. There is a slight crack in the paint at the bottom headset cup, I had known about it, but was sure it was just the paint as it didn't look like it was that deep, but #2 has me thinking otherwise. 2. Wrinkled paint on the tt and dt at the headtube junctions.

Craigslist deal but I'm trying to get my money back. If not, wall art!

PhotoJoe 03-23-12 10:41 AM

Dude, that sucks! Hope you get the cash. If it ends up on the wall, at least it's wall-worthy. Beautiful frame!

GiantDefyGuy 03-23-12 11:48 AM

I'm having a hard time seeing what the actual problem is in those 2 pictures. I do see the paint crack in the first picture, but I don't really see anything unusual in the second one.

And, to me, the first picture with the cracked paint wouldn't stop me from building the thing up and riding it. What am I missing here?

mazdaspeed 03-23-12 11:55 AM

I bought a used aluminum frame once and it had a crack in the head tube almost exactly like yours. I took the headset off and it was cracked all the way through.

UCIMBZ 03-23-12 01:42 PM

The one on the top part is not an issue since it is stopped by the weld. The one on the bottom of the head tube, on the other hand, is problematic.

Vlaam4ever 03-23-12 01:56 PM

My neighbor had his Colnago crack aswell. His was on the downtube just, near the seattube weld. Still a pretty frame. His is wall art. no sense in tossing it.

Incorrect...you let that aluminum frame party with Lindsay Lohan and you will have to check it in for fatigue issues :P

himespau 03-23-12 02:13 PM

Bummer, if that beautiful frame turns out to be toast.

veggie 03-23-12 02:32 PM

Don't know it I said this earlier, but there is a what looks like a stress fracture on both the TT and the DT, which to me says that the frame was in a wreck prior to my owning it. The crack at the bottom of the headtube just proves it even more to me. I am not 100% that the crack is not in the paint, but I have a feeling if I take the cup out the seller(if he actually gets back to me) would put the blame on me.

tagaproject6 03-23-12 02:35 PM

That is a bummer!

Have you verified that it is the metal and not just the paint? Did you remove the headset to check?
