alloy or black groupset on satin black frame

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale CAAD8 satin black frame with Campy Veloce groupset.

Alloy or black on the groupset?

I'm leaning towards black but I haven't bought the group yet.

Thoughts?

... seriously? We don't care. Pick the one you want; you have to ride the thing.

Give us a pic of the CAAD 8. If a matted black, I'd go black Campy probably. If shiny black, i'd probably go metal.

Very nice. I may bug you about the Campy install - this will be my first build. I'm not too concerned about anything except the BB - is getting the correct chainline hit or miss or does it just "fit"?

The record crankset is an external cup type, there is no adjustment, stab the two halves in, torque down the bolt that holds them together and it's done. I haven't done a cartridge type BB but assuming you get a campy Cartridge BB with the crankset it should be about the same.

Also remember that the Campy freehub is a different spline arrangement than Shimano. And also that the campy clusters don't normally come with the lockring (set me back a couple of days for that ) you have to get it seprate.

Thanks for the heads-up - that's good to know but I'm a ways from assembling it. After seeing your bike I'm really liking the black on black. Maybe red handlebar tape just for fun.

It's all good, luckily handlebar tape is easy to change. Also to note if you get an external cup type BB, make sure the cups come with the circlip and wavy washer, the clip holds the one side (drive as I recall) in, the Wavy washer provides preload to account for small tolerance differences in the width of the shell. Also a long screwdriver type torx driver is needed for the brifter bolt, it is a tight angle to get to it alongside the hood, too tight for a torx socket on an extension, or even a screwdriver of many disguises.

It seems a few of us do care (including me).

Anyway...now that we're dealt with Mr Cranky...to the actual question...

I had the same decision to make when I upgraded my matte carbon frame with 105 to Ultegra. I had a choice between the new "grey" ultegra and the more traditional matte silver... The LBS suggested the silver would "pop" more against the black frame...they were right. It looks awesome.

I just drove myself nuts blackening out everything that I could on my bike.
I settled with leaving the derailleurs silver. I have a BBQ CAAD9.
Don't do it to yourself! Don't go through what I went through.
Whichever you go with, don't stress it too much.

There will always be silver on your bike.
Just learn to work with it and keep in mind that you're doing it for you.

For reference, here is my demented work...
(the most recent tweak...a KMC X10SL DLC Black Chain)
