Hit! By a Dog!

Riding down the Don Valley MUP, these people are on the grass with their two dogs. I'm not sure what breed exactly; but fairly big - 40 lbs each.

Suddenly, Dog A decides he is mad at Dog B and takes off after him, and a snarling ball of dogs goes charging onto the trail and right into me. Took the impact on crank, fork, and side of front wheel and somehow stayed up.

No reaction whatsoever from dog owners. Their dogs cause a near crash at 20 km/h or so, and they don't even blink.

Yeesh.

40lbs is avg sized to me. fairly big would be over 60 lbs

RecceDG 03-16-12 03:08 PM

Well there were two of them attached together, so 80 lbs total dogweight.

The dogs were probably just playing with each other man... and not to excuse the owners but you stayed upright, and didn't appear to have any issues to them perhaps? I'm just gonna go with being glad you're alright.

Sorry, dog lovers, but if your pets come into sudden and unwanted contact with me on my bike, words will be had. Staying upright doesn't make it all good.

I have to agree. I like dogs and I've owned and trained some really great ones. I am a former licensed AKC Retriever Hunt Test judge, and I say people not at least attempting to control their dogs in public should not be tolerated.

But, I also think the boneheaded things I see some roadies do should also not be tolerated either...

Are you talking about the don valley in Toronto? That place is a gong show from Edwards Gardens down to Lakeshore. I wouldn't do it on anything but a beach cruiser @ 10kph due to all the families with small children, pets, joggers with earbuds, mup racers, etc. Saw a good crash by the abandoned overpass where the bums sleep that required air ambulance to take a cyclist with spinal injuries out.

It doesn't look like the OP had words with them though.. and if he stays upright and goes along without saying anything, how would they really know how dangerous the situation they just caused for him was? People don't tend to really think of others sadly.

Helicoptor is actually spelled 'helicopter.' I hate people who can't spell. They are the biggest problem.

I must have it lucky around here. The dogs are improvements on the owners, mostly. They're more aware; I see their heads swivel around and I know they heard me, and then they have enough sense to move over out of the way. That's more than I expect from their owners.

Sometimes I catch myself calling out to the dog instead of the human, if I can tell that it hasn't heard me yet. The dog's more likely to guide his nominal master over than the other way around.

I guess you need to learn how to spell your last name correctly.

I'm sure the dogs' owner is equally upset with you for running into their dogs. I can't blame them, why would you be riding that fast on a MUP? Has you been going slower (or not been on a MUP) you would have been able to react in time. Not trying to be a jerk, just food for thought. ALso, this a Road cycling forum. (emoticon here)

RecceDG 03-16-12 07:01 PM

Yup, that Don Valley MUP. It can be a gong show on occasion but I've had good luck with it to this point. I live at Yonge and Sheppard. I'll winkle my way down the back streets to Leslie, enter the trail system on the big hill, and ride all the way to the beach. That makes for a decent 45 km, 1.5 hour ride that I can squeeze in whenever. And it works for all three bikes.

Plus it is uphill all the way home, which keeps my legs honest.

Post impact, words were yelled regarding the lack of control, but all I got was a blank stare. Normally I'd've stuck around to explain my displeasure in more descriptive terms, but I had a train to catch and timings to meet.

I didn't hit the dog; the dog hit me. I was well clear and got T-boned. The posted speed limit there is 20kmh and I was at it or slower.
