Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Never quit!

Climbing hills hurt.

The 41 is harsh.

Couches kill.

So...get off the couch, climb them hills, HTFU, post on the 41, ridicule or be ridiculed (good natured or not...it happens) develop a thick skin. You'll be okay

If I wanted to troll I'd start a CF vs Steel thread. I'd start a Campy vs. Shimano holy war, or brag how light my bike is and how much better it is than yours, how much faster than you it'll make me.

All I wanted was to see if some of y'all had funny little messages to yourselves on your bikes!

The "QUIT" in question is pedaling. Wasn't that obvious? Why else would I write something like that on a bike, on a place where I can see it no matter where on the bars I'm at? Unlike the one with "FAT ASS" sharpie'd on her bars, I'm directing the thought at myself, not passerby.

There are many legit reasons to cut a ride short. Broken equipment, a horrible headache, heatstroke, a bonk, etc -- But I shouldn't quit on a neverending headwind. I shouldn't quit because "I'm tired." I shouldn't quit because "I don't feel like it"

Some find it difficult to find the mental fortitude to not quit, to not surrender. I freely admit I'm one of them. To some, just waking up and making it to work is mentally akin to a half-hour hill climb. Some people struggle with problems that are not of the body, yet are just as crippling, if not more. That's why I picked up cycling again. I think it will harden my mind as well as improve fitness. It can only happen if I don't turn around after a few miles. It can only happen if this time I stick to the bike almost daily, and not give up on it yet again, leaving her to collect dust in the garage, as I've done so many times. Is any of this so hard to comprehend?! Is any of this deserving of your scorn?

I posted this in Road because of all the bikes I've tasted over the years, skinny-tired road bikes, old and new alike, are the ones that set my heart on fire, are the only ones that let me feel like I'm flying, not just trundling along bound to the ground. I've long felt road bikes are the most beautiful of all, the most elegant, the most purposeful. I wouldn't consider any other kind of bike. I thought I'd find kindred spirits in Road. I thought this forum dealt with road bikes, and the experiences and benefits that come from riding them.

I've misjudged badly, haven't I?

A little friendly advice my friend!

"Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level, and then beat you with experience!"

1. Inkandpaint is a he, not a she. Not that it matters, I thought we were all cyclists.

2. Dymo tape FTW. This bike loves it. It looks like rattlecan anyway. I grew up with Dymo tape labels on dashboards. I love the stuff. No electronic label maker can match the sheer fredliness of Dymo. When I find one of my totally thrashed Dream Bikes that absolutely can't do without a paint job, I'll draw it right on the base coat, before the clear goes on.

3. Inkandpaint isn't quitting the 41, he was out putting miles on. My participation, however, may not be as frequent as most here. I try to listen more than say.

4. If this is Slytherin, no wonder Mr. Riddle was so bitter all the time. Someone must've punted him in a crit or something, or p*ssed in his Gatorade. Oh wait, that stuff tastes like polyjuice anyway. Hm. Now that I think on it, yeah.. this place is exactly like Slytherin. With exceptions, of course. Slytherin did have some decent folk in it.

5. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate the kind words. I wasn't expecting a campfire with Kumbaya, but I wasn't expecting brass knuckles across my grill either. Your kind posts remind me that after all.. this is just a forum, where I can don Teflon riding gear and let it all slide off my back.

6. Life is harsh, yes. 41 is harsh, yes. But I think being harsh for the sake of being harsh, is, in fact, a sign of weakness. To each his own, I guess. It'd be nice if people are harsh to you after you've earned it, not before. This is a forum, not Gunny Hartman's PT Class.

We now return you to your previously scheduled activities.

Well, as the short answer to the question, No, I do't have any funny little messages to myself on my bike. So I gave you a funny little quote on the topic.

I have quit a few rides. But I have finished some that took some doing. Last spring, I did the 1200k Texas Rando Stampede, 1253k in 87 hours or so. For me, the first 100 miles was solo into a headwind, but I didn't quit. I also did the Tejas 500 at the Texas Time Trials in the fall last year. 500 miles in 41:39, if I remember correctly. I came in 5th. There were 21 starters, 10 finishers.

A lot of the difference is mental, but I don't think a sticker would really help. The rides that I quit were all solo rides, where I was hot, having cramps, or cold, etc. On the Stampede, I finished the ride, but I was riding with friends when I did. On the Texas Time Trials, a friend volunteered to crew for me, and that was a lot of the motivation to enter in the first place, and to keep going when it got rough. Other people motivate me more than stickers.

This is the Road Cycling forum, but not the Road Bike Riding forum, and there is a bit of difference in meaning.

When evaluated as a single post probably not. When the 41 mob mentality kicks in and it tuns into multiple pages of internet bullies berating a new member for sharing his motivation... yea I'd call that kinda harsh. Of course the anonymity of this medium allows for us to be ******** to other people without any provocation at all. Where in real world, if people behaved as they do on this forum, they'd be lucky to have any teeth remaining.

inkandpaint, team sky has the following words of encouragement printed on the top tubes of their bikes.
