Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Transferring Ultegra cassette

Hi,

I'm transferring a brand new 10speed Ultegra cassette from a Mavic Aksium to my Xero XR-1. I noticed that after I removed the cassette from the Aksium, there are two spacers of different thickness left on the hub. I moved these to the Xero as well, but after putting in all the cogs, the very last smallest cog will not sit properly. I'm guessing the two spacers are taking up too much space. So I'm wondering if it's ok to not use these spacers? I thought all hubs were same length hence my confusion. The two spacers are about the same size as the ones between each cogs if that helps.

The Xero was using a 9 speed Sram cassette and did not have such spacers at the end. Is this a Mavic thing or Shimano/Ultegra thing?

Thanks in advance.

Mavic freehubs are wider than normal 9sp freehubs and need the extra spacer. Sram 10s cassette doesn't need a spacer, Shimano 10sp cassette needs a 1mm spacer when run on a 9sp freehub (which almost all freehubs are).

Thanks for the quick reply. One of the spacer is thinner than the other, so I'm guessing that's the 1mm one. I put that one on the XR-1 then installed the cassette.

Thanks again!
