Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommended racing bike under $1300

So I recently decided that I wanted to start racing. I commute 3o miles daily on my road conversion. Was wondering if anyone could guide me towards a bike in my price range. I don't plan on upgrading the frame, but the components possibly in the future. Don't know much about geared bikes. Just hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks all.

Not a racer myself, but I sure like the BMC SR02. Dunno if Competitive Cyclists still has them, but they were going for about $900. But it would probably also depend on what kind of racing you wanted to do.

There are some nice bikes you can race on bikesdirect.com, or look at your local bike shop.

Any lightly used aluminum frame w 105 or SRAM, try searching ebay for Cannondales of recent vintage.

Or, start here:

Trek 2.1. There are lots out there. Often on sale or lightly used. Easy to upgrade.

Many people have found CAAD10s for under $1200 (they typically retail for $1,500 - $2,000). Look on searchtempest or something.

Check craigslist. Got my CAAD 9-4 for $800 with Mavic K. Equipe, Toupe saddle, CF seat post. You never know what you are going to find at Craigslist.

But do not buy a used Carbon bike as you cannot see micro-fracture with naked eyes unless you bring it to LBS.

If you can find an 05 Allez elite with the e5 slx tubing (my bike) that is what I would suggest. I got mine on CL for $500 with full 105 so that would leave you room to upgrade the wheels and/or components. The columbus e5 slx frames are fantastic and not terribly hard to find, easy to replace if you crash and won't break the bank.

You can race on pretty much anything.

I'm not sure what your current bike looks like - you describe it as a "road conversion" - but you might even try racing on that once or twice before dropping money on another bike.

If that doesn't work, pretty much any aluminum frame from the major manufacturers will be fine. If you can get something in the Shimano 105 or Sram Rival range, even better. Tiagra and Apex also work.

Used CAAD 8 or 9 on local CL.... then spend some of the remaining budget on great set of wheels, bars and nice saddle.

someone mentioned BMC SR02... I have that bike, and I have a Kestrel that would both fit in your budget (the BMC easily), and would make great race bikes. Highly recommendable, both.

Neuvation F100 Apex

With the 10% off from joining their newsletter, the bike comes in under 1300. Not the most attractive bike but hard to beat for the money. If I didn't go the craigslist route, this would have been what I went with.
