Complacent, Inattentive, Stupid?
So I was just riding along...
This morning on my ride to work and descending down the one large hill, coasting along at about 40mph. I happened to notice that my left bar end plug was halfway out.
I took the palm of my hand and whacked it back in....jeez I wish I hadn't done that!!!!
Well I didn't crash but it was an interesting ride for a little bit.
Kinda funny thinking about it now. Anyone else with a stupid story to share?

Yup, I got one .... last summer I was cruising along, doing maybe 25-30mph when I decided I didn't like the song playing on my iPod. So I pulled it out of my jersey pocket to change tunes .... pretty simple, right? Except that I dropped the stupid thing, so now I'm watching it swaying back and forth still attached to my ears .... sure enough it then gets caught in my front spokes. The rest you can imagine, no crash, but some mangled spokes, a seriously demolished iPod and pretty sore ears from the buds being yanked out.

I was riding along, glancing over at this house getting fixed up. I noticed that this whole upper wing was temporarily supported by just a few 2x4s. I was staring at it incredulously, trying to see what else could be holding it up when I ran off the road. Saved myself just in time before hitting a guardrail.

Riding along 20 mph or so, Put my hand on the rear tire, in front of the seat stay, behind the seat tube, to clean debris off the tire. Rotation of the tire pulls my hand forward jamming my hand between the tire and the seat tube.
Skidded to a stop, with a rather bruised hand.
Takeaway is that you always wrap your thumb around the seat stay to prevent your hand getting sucked in.

Same thing here with whacking the bar end plug back in while moving. Never doing that again.

Got to the gas station that is the turnaround spot for our tuesday night out and back. Riding in a tight circle in the parking lot because my brakes were being funny not paying attention to the gear I was in (pretty new to riding at this point), hit my brakes to check them, only to realize that now I'm standing still and in a huge gear. Over I go in front of the whole club.

stupid category:
riding with family at a large park. pack of joggers clogging the mup, I go through the grass around them. I look down and see goathead thorns going round and round. supremely confident in my 'thornproof' tires (conti plus series) I keep riding rather than stop and pull them out.
double flat in approx 5 min. had something like 5 thorns in front, 8 or 9 rear.

Last week after work I was on one of our rural blacktops, came to an intersection (not paying attention to the road in front of me) sitting straight up taking a drink and ran over a set of rumble strips across the whole lane. Scared the hell out of me, dropped my bottle, and I think I rattled fillings loose. Picked up my bottle, and took off again. Came to the second set and went to the right of it where there is about an 8" patch of smooth pavement. Was doing 20 or so by then, and for some reason was looking at the rumble strips instead of my wheel, and dropped the front off onto the muddy shoulder. Tank slapper--> ditch--> culvert. No injury, no damage, no crash. Guy on his front porch saw the whole thing.

my stupidest move was looking at my rear hub while still having a foot clipped in. I lost my balance, and actually saved myself from going over, but the angle of the bike meant I couldn't un-clip. I ended up falling over on purpose so I could get untangled from the bike. Someone from work was behind me at the light in their truck, and thought it was pretty funny

I was climbing up a 15% grade at a steady 40mph. Not particularly fast, but easy does it.
Unfortunately the speed limit was 25mph and I got pulled over.

Riding along slowly on a residential street, fiddling with my new Garmin Edge.
Look up to see I'm about to rear-end a parked car.
Swerved to the left.
Didn't *collide* with the car, but left a streak of my black cork tape on the right rear fender.
No damage, not even a scratch; Just rubbed off the cork, leaving a ground-off area in the wrap.

After one of my long rides, I felt like such a champ, I tried to ted shred with my cleats.
The wheel sucked my foot in and my foot was stuck between the wheel and the seat tube.
Good thing there was a car at the stoplight to hold me up while I pried my foot out
