Boyd Vitesse or Soul 3.0SL????

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Boyd Vitesse or Soul 3.0SL????

For the past three weeks I've read everything on the internet on both wheels. I would be using them as my everyday training wheel riding in and outside of NYC(mostly outside) and weigh 175lbs.

From my understanding the Boyd Vitesse wheels are new and I haven't seen too much feedback on them.

Help! I am ready to pull the purchase trigger this weekend!

I've been riding the Soul 3.0SL for 2 years. I'm very happy with them. They are still true as they day they arrived, and the hubs seemingly spin forever. Expect about a 6 week wait from ordering to delivery.

I'm 175 also. do 50-70 mile rides on rolling hills and I have the 30mm vitesse wheels. I am very happy with them. Both Boyd and Sean are great and stand behind their products. I saw flip a coin and call it. if you dont like the answer, go with the boyds

Got the new Vitesse wheels mounted, they look sweet. I know you didn't like the look Bianchi10 compared to yours but they look good. If you're doing the Monster Cookie at the end of the month I can show them to you

Work, and the torrential downpour in Portland have kept me from a long ride, but I rode 5-6 miles in the loop in my neighborhood. They spin up fast and felt like I held speed better than my old aksium wheels. Mine weighed in at 1540 grams including tape for 20/24. ( for reference my Aksiums weighed 2020 grams with tape)

Hoping to get out for a long ride & climb soon!

@Bianchi10: Evidently I need 50 posts to PM....Getting together for a ride would be great, though I do need to get my butt out on the road a lot more this month, especially climbing. Was thinking about riding today, but I seriously would get blown across the road it's so windy here!

Back on topic though, I did get out on the Boyds yesterday afternoon for about 20 miles before the rain started again. The perceived improvement over my Aksiums is apparent. Dare I say, they "felt" great compared to the Aksiums! I know that's not a measurable difference as a lot of BFers will be quick to point out, but to me they were stiffer (especially when standing), quicker, lighter, smoother (hub-wise), and it felt like an overall better ride. 100% placebo effect I'm sure.

I'll need to pay attention to times and such in future rides. This was more of a shakedown of the wheels.

I'd love to see some pics of them mounted up. I am considering the Soul 3.0SL's for my bike as well.

Here is a picture I used that was mainly for the purpose of showing the new garmin mount I got. Sorry the wheels are cropped out of the picture.

Here is a picture form several months ago...

Those wheels look beautiful.

OP, this question will be asked until the end of time. I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with either!

Not to throw this off topic, but what about the Reynolds Solitude? I assume it's the weight that puts everyone off, but my wheel game isn't proper and neither is my knowledge so I'm sure there's something I'm missing. Looks like a nice set to me, but it is heavier.

Hate to threadjack, but what's the diff between wheels like the Boyd or Soul and Kyrsium Elites?

Those Boyds are nice looking tires. The decals aren't overwhelming like on other wheelsets. If those are the Boyd Vitesse Alloy wheels, it appears that the decals have changed.

Although I think the bike has something to do with it. I love those traditional horizontal top tube bikes and the color scheme on that Ridley is great. That bike is hot in my book.

Can anyone comment on the extra rolling resistance that comes with the wider rim on the Boyd Vitesse? I haven't seen anyone talk about that yet. Thanks in advance.

I haven't ridden Boyd's aluminum wheels but i do have a set of the 50mm carbon clinchers. Great wheels and they look fantastic. Boyd's customer service is top notch and replies back to emails pretty quickly. I'm sure the Souls are good too as i've heard many good things about them.

Wheels like the Ksyriums are designed to be mass produced and appeal to a broad range of riders. The low count, straight pull spokes are machine build friendly and they are built heavy enough to be used at OEM equipment on complete bikes. I'm not saying they are bad wheels. They have a good durability rep on these boards and the 100-200g weight penalty and supposedly poor aerodynamics are unlikely to be noticed by most riders. But if you do ever have a problem they can be difficult to deal with because they require proprietary parts.

In contrast, Boyd and Souls are built more application specific. They do have rider weight limits but at least in the case of Boyd offer a heavier build when required. Basically, they give you the option to fine tune your wheelset to you and your riding without costing any more than some popular factory wheels. Also, they use more common spokes and in some cases rims and hubs so any lbs should be able to work on them should they need it.

Actually the wider rim allows for a shorter contact patch with the asphalt. This wider yet shorter contact patch actually lowers the rolling resistence of the tire. I think Zinn had an article about this recently on Velonews.

The extra resistance is optional, I ordered mine without it.

Seriously, these wheels feel faster and more stable than the Bontrager Race wheels I was using. I feel more confident in the descents now than before. I'm using the same tires now as before, and there definitely is not any extra resistance at cruising speed. And I am running a lower PSI in the Boyds...
