cadence and music

"Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin is about 90 bpm. Handy song to play in your head when focusing on keeping your cadence up.

I really like Velobeats mostly because it is the perfect riding tempo but I would never choose that music myself. My own hand-selected playlists aren't nearly up-tempo enough.

Of course the downside to velobeats is times like last week when I was riding along and a techno dance mix of Sting's "Englishman In New York" came on and I almost heaved. Had to listen to some Kyuss to put my head right.

Funny. My training music is usually one of Philip Glass's portraits trilogy Opera soundtracks, (Einstein on the beach, Akhenaten, Satyagraha). 2 hours of minimalist music thats keeps me on pace, and also makes the time go by so much faster.

I've not met many people who are into Philip Glass. Very cool. Saw him in concert once with Allen Ginsberg.

Crystal Method for me.

Ah, I don't listen to music while cycling. I find it dangerous. I meant that playing the song in my head helps me keep the cadence up and consistent.

fishymamba 03-31-12 10:28 PM

I just listen to any song and it helps me maintain a rhythm. Most techno/electro/trance/dubstep songs have varying beat patterns, but they seem to work the best for me. I guess I just like the music :D

Rap tends to screw with my strokes, I start making hand guestures too. But, Cham makes me smile.

I had the Hot Dog song from the end of the Mickey Mouse Club House cartoon stuck in my head on my last ride. I have a baby daughter.

Dont Need No Doctor by John Mayer is great for grinding out a nasty hill or accelerating out of a rest break:

My FAVORITE song on my cycling playlist. I always get a second wind when this song comes on (which is why I have it on there like 5 times!)

Sounds like something out of a high-stakes action movie! Like it!

Personally this is one of my favs, very fitting title too:

RugbySH9 04-01-12 10:33 AM

I used to ride to The Pogues but theb I just got pumped to have a few beers at the end of my ride. These days its Volbeat, Adelitas, & Rise Against

bianchi10 04-01-12 11:03 AM

I like this one too. not only do I like the song, but I tend to drift off mentally and think about how awesome this movie is and I forget about any kind of pain or fatigue I have while riding. lol

rumrunn6 04-01-12 06:43 PM

whatever gets you thru the nite man

BarracksSi 04-01-12 07:16 PM

I like Motley Crüe's "Kickstart My Heart"! One of my favorite songs to play when I run also.

jordo_99 04-01-12 08:30 PM

I play this one in my head if I really need to get pumped up during a ride:
Brand New - The Archers Bows Have Broken

I used to have a few different training mixes (tempo/recover/interval) on my phone but I've since lost them and haven't made another one yet...something I'll probably be doing at work when things get slow next week.

alexaschwanden 04-01-12 09:13 PM

Pandora has a great selection, I listen to it a lot when riding.

trevspeed 04-01-12 10:36 PM

how do you guys listen to music while cycling? do you use earphones? and a mp3/ipod? it must be really dangerous not being able to hear whats around you

I ride with earphones but only when I'm on bike paths. If I'm in traffic or on the highway I only put in one ear (earphone in ear that's away from traffic). Either way I don't have the music so loud I can't hear people coming up behind me.
I think being aware of your surroundings is much more than just listening though. I'm constantly scanning to the sides and up ahead for stuff that might cross my path as well as slowing down significantly at any intersection where I can't avoid an unseen vehicle going double the speed limit time to stop...even if I have the right-of-way.
