Nothing underscores the dysfunction of our tax code more than the AMT.

But what's effed up is when they came up with the AMT years ago they put in fixed dollar income amounts for when it kicks in. Back then it would only be for the "wealthy." But it's not adjusted/indexed for inflation, so now it hits lots of "middle class" folks.
What's really crazy is I did my taxes first with itemizing all my legit deductions. Result: Large AMT hit. I re-did them using standard deduction, result: no AMT and a LOWER final tax amount.

A sensible tax code wouldn't require something as stupid as the AMT, which Congress passed 40+ years ago to stop wealthy people from paying too little tax due to loopholes. Then the idiots in Washington never updated it and a tax that was originally intended for the .1% (literally, not the one percent at the time, the .1 %, the very, VERY wealthy) now impacts the upper middle class. There are no words for how skull farked that situation is.

We probably need a flat tax with 2 or 3 brackets and no deductions (except maybe for charity and maybe (maybe not) mortgage interest on your FIRST home).

I'd say "primary," as opposed to "first," though it would open the doors to ways to play with that, too; If you're going to limit it to just the first home, you're damning people for moving when there are a ton of good reasons to do so.

In other news, I revisited one the road that the grooving machine had destroyed a few weeks ago. It's freshly repaved.
You can't beat cruising on smooth surface. Too bad I was only on it for a mile or so. I'd love to have a 20-mile stretch of that, slightly rolling, with no wind.

I have a race in an hour and I'm sitting at the office eating M&Ms. Zero elevation change, how I love you so.

I'm thinking I'll list my bike as an office vehicle. That way my business can pay for all the stuff I buy for it, just like my car!!

Then again, if my business owns my bike, if the business pays for gas for the car, and I ride my bike to work, why can't all my food, i.e. fuel, be paid for as well? Hmmmmm..........
then again, I really don't want an audit.

well for 1099 in order to write off your food you have to be out of town overnight, which I always am and I own a business as well and I'm thinking of putting the name on some jerseys and paying for a portion. If I list it as advertising then its legit. Either way they won't find anything wrong with what I'm doing. Just proportioning out my write offs between job and business to make sure I pay nothing...If they audit, they audit. I keep all my records so they can spend a bunch of time sifting through it.
