Cheap Shoes
 

Does anyone on here have any recommendations for cheap shoes (under 75) for a first time clipless wearer? I know that there are plenty of cheap shoes out there, I was just hoping you guys knew of some that didn't suck entirely.

SIDI recently started producing a model in China called the Nevada. It's pretty good for an introductory shoe but it's closer to the higher end of your price spectrum at around $80.

Shimano and Lake carry some pretty inexpensive shoes.

Go on eBay. Lots of people buy shoes, try them for a little while, find out they hate them and sell them used.

Yeah, used shoes can be kind of gross, but getting $300 shoes for $50 isn't a bad deal.

I have an older pair of Specialized Sport shoes. New ones sell for around $80-90. With a good sale or discount you may be able to get them for $75. The clearance table at my nearby Performance store has some good, but limited selections. If you prefer a more walkable shoe that doesn't look like a bike shoe, Performance often has their Traverse shoes on sale for about $40. Pretty decent, but you need to figure out how to keep the laces away from your chaninring. (A small velcro strap seems to do it for me)

You can keep an eye on Chainlove.com as well. Shoes fequently come up there, but that's not an item I would personally buy in a rush on a deal-at-a time site.

+1 ebay can get you some bargains, and if you don't like the fit, you can often get back about the same as what you paid.

Northwave Ayrlites with carbon sole, a winner, at $80

Shimano R087 are usually within that price range and are pretty good.

I owned a cheap pair of Forte cycling shoes that sucked, at least compared to a good pair of SIDIs. You might want to avoid them.

I've had good luck with Shimanos. I paid around $50 for my current pair and I'm into my 4th season with them. Very comfy, especially if you have wider feet. I've ridden centuries with no problems or discomfort.

I bought a pair of Scattante Scalinos for the retail price. They're my first pair so I can't say whether they're good or not compared to the others but I'm satisfied so far.

I have Diadora Aerospeed Comp shoes- they were about $75 from Performance. I like them- I have wide feet and they fit well.

I'd second Diadora Aerospeed at this price point. Try the Shimanos and the LG Ergo also. Be aware that sizing tends to be all over the place across brands...My Sidi genius is a size smaller than the LG i recently bought. Walk into a Performance (or similar) and try one on. Mail order will most likely result in a return, esp since the width is difficult to account for, even if you get the sizing right. If you have the budget, shoot for its higher end, as a lousy shoe will quickly make itself known and make you miserable.
