What gear should i be in?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Depends on your cadence and wheel size, but for 82rpm on 23s, 53/18 and 53/14 gives 30.4 and 39.1 kph resp. If your cadence is 95rpm then it's 53/21 and 53/16 See www.gear-calculator.com

53-11 and 53-11. You should only be going 60kph at all times.

Swap your 53t for a 70t and remove all rear cogs other than an 11t. Should easily be able to spin up rollers and moderate hills, though with this setup I tend to wish I had a 12t or even a 14t in back when I start climbing 15+% grades.

A lot of new cyclists are "grinders" and the one that feels right may well be too big a gear and they should be trying to get used to spinning more.

Start in a low gear.

Pedal 90 cadence.

Shift up

Pedal 90 cadence.

Repeat until you hit a gear in which 90 feels like you're going to puke.

Shift down 1 gear.

Ride like that. As you get stronger your puke threshold gear will get higher. Don't over complicate things.
