Snot Rocket Machine

What can I do. It seems as though I'm clearing my nose every 15 minutes or so. Its kind of fun seeing the big ones fly, but at the same time, I'd rather not be doing it. Are there tricks to eliminating mucus? Take a decongestant pre-ride? Or am I just a snot monster?

Yes, you are waiting too long between snot rockets. Every 5-10 minutes is a more appropriate frequency in cool weather. In especially cold weather, cut that timeframe in half.

tagaproject6 04-06-12 04:38 PM

This is why you don't draft unannounced :D

Bianchi Ben 04-06-12 04:39 PM

hahahaha, not exactly the answer I was expecting. but sure, that makes sense! Thanks!

Anyone else?

DropDeadFred 04-06-12 04:40 PM

I don't do em...

idoru2005 04-06-12 04:41 PM

Argh. I was on a group ride last night. One rider kept clearing his nose pretty frequently. Like once every 4-5 minutes. What's worse is it would come out as a spray. Only way to avoid getting sprayed was to ride to the left of him as he only blew out on the right side.

Outstanding thread title.

Dang, and I would have thought riding in front would have done the trick...

Oh come on... really? Or maybe you're a lucky one with no mucus issues?

Why thank you sir!

I heard that a decongestant helps. I have allergies, so I just take an Alavert before riding.

duckracer 04-06-12 05:45 PM

Nasacort or Astelen works for me, but I have year round alergies.

wrr1020 04-06-12 06:07 PM

Reminds me of a time i was drafting some random guy and i drafted unannounced. Either he didn't know i was behind him or knew and fired one anyway so i get off his wheel. It was all spray and i rode right through it. Was pretty disgusting.

KypD 04-06-12 06:31 PM

it started raining mid-ride today, and i turned in to a SR Machine was well. it was incredible, as usually after the first clearing i'm good to go all day. every few minutes....it got old after a while.

tagaproject6 04-06-12 06:42 PM

And here I am thinking that SRM was some sort of power meter :(

alexp247365 04-06-12 07:48 PM

Blow it into you glove... wipe glove on side of bibs... You don't have to get out of line, or take you eye's off road that way. And don't worry too much about dirtying your bibs. They will need cleaning after the ride regardless.

sqroot3 04-06-12 08:15 PM

regardless of whether you have inhalant allergies (dust allergy, seasonal allergy, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, etc), ask your doctor if any of the following are appropriate for you
ipratropium nasal spray 0.03%
nasal steroid (flonase, nasonex, nasocort, rhinocort)

if you do have inhalant allergies, ask your doctor if any of the following are appropriate for you
over-the-counter antihistamines
nasal antihistamine (astelin, astepro...that shiz be bitter)

you'll probably still be snotting, but less.

Mansram01 04-06-12 08:41 PM

I tend to have a nasal drip so I can't just blow it out. I have to wipe. Sucks...

Same, but it's not too frequent. But, I wear Giro Zero gloves, so their terrycloth for nose-wiping is luxurious.

I c wut u did ther.....

Get to know your riding partners. When you know more about their sex lives and bowel habits than you do their gearing choice.....you will be able to telepathically avoid snot rockets. Until then....bask in the ooze, newbs.

1 out of 3 end up on my arm. That is all.

Snot Rocket Machine....possibly a great name for a punk rock band.

Looigi 04-07-12 07:56 AM

Personally, I find successfully launching a substantial snot rocket can be quite gratifying. I do try position myself and time it such as not to besmirch other riders or bystanders.

fixed for my needs.

My schnoz must have a bad angle as I never learned this trick. I also could never blow smoke rings or turn my tongue upside-down.

Solution: I wear a bandanna on my sleeve in winter for wipeage, not an issue in summer.

Why worry about it? A good mucous flow is very healthy for noses, and for other (feminine) orifices. Taking decongestants etc to staunch a natural body function?
In my tribe, it's a great sign of affection.
