Best Mountain pedals for road bike??
Im thinking of switching to mountain shoes and swaping out my road pedals for SPD style ones now that Im doing more urban riding. I decided to finally make a switch when I found my sellf with a flat tire and no extra tube in the city. Doing the duckwalk 2 miles back top my car wasnt fun to say the least
Im thinking Crank Bros eggbeaters for weight or Candy pedals for stability if anyone has feedback on this. Dont have much experience with MTB petals

spd side has some very light weight pedals as well. Exustar and Expedo makes some. I just moved from spd to SPD-SL myself. Just couldn't find shoes that are stiff enough using spd. (for road shoes....)

I have eggbeaters and the standard cleat works on a MTB or touring road shoe. (touring shoes have tread like a MTB shoe, but no tread lugs for mud.)
when I switched to road shoes, I bought the crank brothers quattro cleat and it works ok with eggbeaters. the contact surface is surely much smaller than other road systems though.
my wife rides speedplay frogs. really good pedal and cleat system for 2-bolt. that would be my vote. harder to clip in than eggbeaters as you have to be lined up perfectly. but easy to clip out and the cleat is well protected with a MTB/touring shoe.

Shimano PD-A600. One of the lighter SPD pedals that Shimano makes.

I use A-520 SPD pedals. They're a lot like road pedals, but for two-hole shoes with recessed cleats. I get off the bike and walk, a lot, to enjoy the scenery, or to scramble down to river and fill my bottles. These weigh about 315 grams.

I have Egg Beaters on four bikes and Candies on one other. I'm not sure the platform makes any difference. If your shoes are stiff the Egg Beaters are probably the way to go. I ride centuries with my Egg Beaters and have no foot discomfort.

Try Specialized BG Pro MTB shoes. I've been using them for over 4,700 miles and not one hot spot on any ride, including century rides. They are very stiff and do not bend.

Wouldn't it be easier to just carry a patch kit with you? Just saying.

I do usually, just happened to forget to pack it that day. Not just that, im not doing the long stretches of road in the city so im finding im getting off the bike more for various reasons. Using road shoes exclusively for years im not use to the concept of getting off my bike and actually walking either

I keep all my stuff in a small pack. I am a commuter as well, so it is extremely difficult for me to go out for a rec ride without something on my back. All the stuff one may need (and then some) is in that pack and weighs only about 5 lbs. Baggy jersey pockets look silly.
And to stay on-topic, the ability to walk is important, moreso than any other benefit a road shoe can provide.

I use Time ATAC Alium pedals on my road bike. 40 mile round-trip commute, day-in, day-out. Excellent value.

Fresh Garbage
It's only about racing or not. Wide platform road pedals feel a lot better. I have been on mtb pedals and road pedals for a few years now and it always feels nicer to ride on the road pedals.

describe the float and disengagement sensation of egg beaters? is it similar to speedplay, seems like kind of the same premise, symmetrical retention but able to swivel a bit..
