Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bought a used 2010 Trek 2.3, Ultegra RD?

I bought my GF a very lightly used Trek 2.3 off Craigslist recently. The guy's wife I got it from bought it because she was going to do triathlons and changed her mind. Put all of 112 miles on it according to the bike computer.

It has an Ultegra RD, but Trek's web site says that model came with 105. Would this have been an option when buying it to have an Ultegra derailleur swapped on there? I doubt this is something they would have done themselves. Any other explanation?

Probably just changed it out herself.

My CAAD 10-5 is supposed to be full 105 but I changed it out for Ultegra myself. It confuses some people.

Huh, that just seem weird since she gave up so soon after buying the bike. I guess someone convinced her she needed Ultegra .

Those came in double and triple models. The 2009 Triple had Ultegra RD, while the double had 105. I have found more than half the time on Craigslist you subtract one year from what they say it is. Often bike shops sell last year's stock, and folks are right about when they purchased just not that they got a left over.

Then if yours is a double I don't know what to say other than probably the LBS changed it.

Why the hell would the triple have an Ultegra RD?

Ahhh... it is a triple. That most likely explains it.

Most likely because Trek found it worked better with the triple set-up. My 2.3 has this feature too.
