Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Y'all DO realize there's a Fifty-Plus forum, too, right?

On the Bikejournal.com, there's a name that's not too far from the top, "melo", he's 80+. He also posts on the forums there.

Keep in mind this is the "Road Cycling" forum, not the "Road Bike Riding" forum or the "Racing" forum or the "Fast" forum, so as long as you can keep a cruiser or adult tricycle upright on the pavement, you're good to participate.

I also see in that BikeJournal screen shot, that I'm ahead of 10Wheels, which is kind of surprising. I'm "GlacierChaser" on the Bikejournal site.

Won't last long. I have more bikes than you, and my wife says I need to ride them all. Besides you ain't old yet.

At least on a bike you can't make the "I thought I was hitting the brake pedal" mistake that old drivers sometimes make.

I posted something like that here and some guy jumped all over me - said Al Gore's comment was misunderstood and taken out of context. Hope he doesn't catch you too.

But now Al Gore has moved on to saving the world with $5 gas

I know a year or two ago, when you were trying for 20,000 miles, you sure had a bunch more than me, so that's why it was surprising. I have ramped it up a bit, though.

And I may not be old, but on the other hand, I'm not retired, so I've got to squeeze all my riding into fewer hours.

And hey, I rode out of Brookshire last week- not exactly League City, but closer at least- it was a gorgeous weekend, lots of flowers out, had a great time.

By the way...my introduction to Computers was Fortran programming...on punchcards.

I'm 58 this month and still do club rides but I get tired of it sometimes. I know some guys in their 60s who still go pretty fast in the hills.

Im only in my late 40s, but have clear memories of touring in France 20 odd years ago, and on Sundays Id always see group rides out, roadies, and there would always be a bunch of older fellers in their 60s and 70s and that always impressed me.
I strive to be one of those guys in 20 years or so. (and they werent hanging about either les vieuxs monsieurs)

I would crush a 78 year old broad on a bike, and I would hope it would make her quit the sport.

I learned this thinking in the 41 and the 33.

I'm not quite on 10 Wheels level, but last year at 64, I did well over 5,000 miles. This year, at 65, I hope to break it by one or two thousand miles.
