I'm 165lbs, looking for something that's slightly more race-worthy, although I know that's hard to come by at this price point. They'd be going on a caad10 rival.

I've been following Williams, Neuvation, mavic, and the ultegra wheelset. Not really sure where to go/what I really need.

Any suggestions?

For $450 you will maybe shed about 200g and get a smidge more aero. Well, you won't get more aero with the Mavics. Either way don't expect to notice much.

Dont know the weight of the Fulcrums but Boyd Rouleirs (sp) are 425 shipped. 1540g. Nice wheels.

well i was thinking if i went with neuvations or ultegra that'd get me to 1600 grams (or the ones you guys posted). i wont notice a difference with aero or stiffness if i upgrade either?

Noticing an aero difference is pretty difficult, and maybe impossible when riding/racing in a group. And the aero differences between aluminum clinchers are pretty small. As for stiffness, I haven't ever heard that the Fulcrums have an issue, but I've also never ridden on them either.

But if you just want new wheels then get some. Having a second set ready to go can be handy, maybe mounted with a different type of tire. I just think it would be even more handy if you saved up for a deeper rim section (40mm or more) or something that was in some way more distinctly different than what you have. How about a Powertap? That might make you faster.

Soul 2.0s have been working great for me! They are super light and have really good hubs.

Up your budget very slightly. Here are a few options (maybe $500 -$550 or so):
Boyd Rouleur or Vitesse
Customer handbuilts from Psimet or someone else (likely Kinlin 30mm or 27mm rims)

I'd also highly recommend looking for a deal on Shimano RS80s. Shimano wheels often don't get a lot of credit since most people have experience with their low end (RS10, R500) offerings. The RS80s use a carbon laminate rim, which I believe is the same as the rim on the much more expensive Dura Ace wheel. The rims are light giving them great acceleration, and the hubs are smooth as well. If you shop around (eBay/Craigslist, UK Sellers) you can get them for slightly higher than your price range ($500ish I think). PlanetX Bikes in the UK was the cheapest I think. Very nice factory wheel.

While most people look at total wheel weight, my understanding is that reducing the rotational weight (rims) has a larger effect than reducing the weight of the hubs (if this is wrong someone correct me). I personally like the RS80s and find them to be very smooth.

yeah, as far as i understand rotational mass is the most important figure in acceleration. any reason to go to a higher mm like 27mm? I know its stiffer, but is that about it?

Well... out of your budget most likely, but I LOVE my Fulcrum 3 2 way's, and the non 2-way version is cheaper. Never had wheels delivered this true (I have two sets), nor have I had wheels stay this perfectly true on the crap I ride on.

sram built to shimano's specs, which was a smart thing for them to do in both the MTB and road markets.

they are interchangeable. there is no difference between listing a wheel as compatible with shimano/sram or just shimano.

mavic ksyrium elites is about as close to that as I can get a recommendation. They will probably run a few $$ more, but they are light and bullet proof.

They're $529 now, but are great - I went from 30mm 1750g Eastons to these 50mm 1465g wheels and there was a noticeable difference.

I picked up a set of Dura Ace WH-7850-C24's on ebay for about $650. yeah, its over your budget by a bit but for me its worth every dime - its light yet withstood some ridiculous potholes. its a CF wheel with aluminum brake surfaces. the newer revision can go tubeless. i think its an under appreciated item. they're not as flashy which i like.

that said, any of the wheels you're looking at will make a noticeable difference on your CAAD10.

Very similar to the RS80s I mentioned earlier. DA version has lighter hubs and is a bit more polished, the RS80 is slightly heavier and a few hundred cheaper. I'm not knocking in the D/A version BTW, I own the RS80s, and am thinking of getting the DA if I can score a good deal on them. For the OPs budget, he should be able to slide into the RS80s though.

I picked up Easton EA90's on eBay for $350 from a fellow who was upgrading a his 300 mile Colnago. They dropped a pound at the wheels compared to the Fulcrum 7's that came on my bike. I also changed to Michelin Service course 3s and light weight tubes. Can't be actually sure that the bike rides better, but I think it does. Andy
