2004 goals = done!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm not sure when I decided but at some point this year, I told myself that I would ride 200km in a day, solo b/c no one I know wants to ride with me So today, with a 8:20am start time, in low 40 degree average temp (was in the high 30s when I started), I rode, and rode, and rode, and then rode more and eventually hit 200km (actually, I go in miles so 125.5 to be exact but 200km sounds more impressive). To sum up the ride, if someone had offered me a ride home at mile 100, I would have taken it. But no one did so I finished. Time for the ride is unimportant to me (and I was slow which makes it less important). It was more the mental and physical struggle I had to go through to actually finish something that I knew I was doing for no other reason than I told myself to do it. And I did. Now back to eating.

I'm going to have an extra beer for you! That's very cool. I love it when people ask "why" when you tell them something like that ... afterall, it's a case of "why not" rather than "why".

Excellent! Congratulations.

Now is the time to set a goal for 2005 - say a double non-metric century? Sunday would be good for that.

Happy new year.

Double non-metric is on the list for 2005. I think I'm going to need someone with me for that one though. And it's not going to be any time soon that's for sure.

Macman, I do a lot of things that the only answer when asked why, is why not. Makes life more interesting. Glad somebody out there understand Enjoy that beer. I'll be pouring a few Guinesses for myself in a bit.

I did a similar ride back in college, around Halloween weekend. I headed out and back on two parallel highways (low traffic). Unfortunately there was a tailwind on the way out that day. The first sixty or so miles were done in about three hours. The return trip in to the headwind was more like 5 hours! I was pretty cooked at the end, but I enjoyed it. That's still my longest ride ever.

Congratulations on the accomplishment. That took a truckload of determination to do in December, especially by yourself. For what it's worth, I totally agree with the "why not?" mentality described above. So, have a Guinness or ten for me - why not?
