1st flat today
Flatted my rear tire today at mile 28 of a 40 mile run. No big deal as I was only 1 mile from home and I had a spare tube but called my wife who came with my truck. Took the bike to my LBS and got a new tube and finished my ride.
Point of this is not the flat...I always knew it would happen eventually but I was really surprized by the concern of strangers to stop and see if I needed help including a municiple motorcycle police officer.
In my particular town I sometimes feel like alot of drivers go out of their way to be confrontational to cyclists, scare and/or even come close enough to actually physically hurt a cyclist but today I was really touched by the willingness of strangers to try to help especially in my neck of the woods.
I know Im often too busy to stop and see if someone needs assistance but thats going to change...

Practice changing tubes in your garage before you get a flat, it'll make it much easier next time it happens.

Who takes their bike to a shop to get a flat fixed? Sheesh.
On your other point, I have personally benefited from the benevolence of strangers when I had a mechanical so I always try to slow down and ask if somebody's alright if I see them on the side of the road. It's good karma.

The responses to the thread remind me of this:

I'm glad you had a good experience with offers of help etc after the flat.

Throw the stick!!!!
You posted about calling your wife and taking your bike to a shop to have a flat repaired. This is going to be fun.
Now, spend an hour or so practicing replacing your tube. Next time you will be back on the road in less than five minutes.

My wife would have told me to fix it or walk.

good seatbag: https://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...s.php?id=34440
what to put in it: park tool pre-glued patch kit, spare tube, tire bead tool, energy gel, $10 bill, co2 inflator, 2 cartridges, 1-3 allen wrenches (make sure you have the one that adjusts your seatpost, at least)
what to practice at home:
- patching a tube
- replacing a tube
- using inflator
btw don't open the bag on a regular ride and eat the gel. the purpose of the emergency use gel is for when you screw up and don't have enough nutrition and know you're going to need it, or after you bonk.

To complete the analogy, those letters should have come from Car and Driver

I think he went to the LBS to buy another tube, not have them fix his flat.

I think the point of the post is that the OP was impressed that people stop and help others in distress. The thing is, you weren't in distress. You had a flat. Of course it was going to happen and it will happen again and again and again and again....pop off the wheel, fix the flat and keep pedaling.

Typical newb mistake to post in the 41 about dealing with a flat in any way other than just HFTU and fixing it on the spot in under 5 minutes.
Throw in any mention of calling a wife, getting picked up in a car, and going to the LBS to deal with it, and you're really in for it.
[cringes]

Got your point. And it's a good "Pay It Forward" attitude for you and anyone to start again. Nice one.

Riding like its 1990
Change the flat or walk home.
Having the wife pick you up, take you to the shop and have them change it is apparently the ProFred mechanic chase vehicle.
And how the heck would getting a MIYATA change anything?

Its the 41, gotta have some fun at your expense.

Because no self respecting straight man would be caught dead in a miyata. Shaving your legs is one thing, driving a miyata is another

On any given weekend, there's more Miatas being tracked than any other single sports car anywhere in the world.

A bit of advice: You can avoid calling attention to your own emasculation by not taking potshots at other's masculinity.

So what, the haters in this thread emerged from the womb with a tire lever in their hand? Criticism, yes. Constructive? No.
And come on, man. Making fun of what people drive in a Cycling forum? Did you have a bad morning?
Oh yeah, this is the 41. The only place where a thread can be diverted in less than five posts and fueled for pages before anyone is reminded of the original topic.
