Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have a good saddle. I wear biker shorts. I don't give a harry rats butt if anyone likes it or not. On a long ride the last thing I want to hurt is my rear end, tant area and the boys. If you don't care about that then feel free to wear your tight 501's and ride, ride, ride..

I get crabby sometimes......only got a 25 mile ride in today because of intermittent rain....but I mean no hate.

Peace Out. Happy new year.
I was super sick yesterday morning, so just walking around is exercise to me today. I feel like I was kicked by a mule everytime I cough. Sometimes ya just gotta raise the blood pressure and excitement levels. When I was being taught to be a Navy Instructor, they told us that sometimes you have to be dramatic to get a point across and remembered.

If I'm riding in a group or next to someone I like to know that they know what they are doing. there is a trust factor when riding in a group. If someone is riding over their heads they can take out several others. That is why people judge you by what you wear and your equiptment. Riding next to people that I'm uncertain of wears me out when I could be just riding. So conform or you will always be mistrusted by the group. That's the way it is so get over it.

53-11,

Nothing will quiet the naysayers better than actually beating them in a race! You'd likely gain some respect for being good and marching to your own drummer.

'Ya know, if you'd actually step away from the keyboard, get on your bike, and race or ride with a fast group no one would give you any grief about the kind of shorts you wear.

SteveE

P.S. I cant imagine that So. San Francisco is too far from where you live but I didn't see anyone fitting your description there, much less winning a race.

My boy don't roll that way. He's the best but he doesn't need to prove it. Maybe you need to race. The big guy rides for his self and for little guys like you with big dreams.

That makes me think of a dream I had recently in which I somehow had a bunch of money and managed to make a cluster of about eight dual-processor G5s into which I had hacked a more advanced liquid cooling system than the one that's now being installed standard. I was running 4 of the new 30" Mac monitors too... It was hot.

Oh yeah, and I'm typing this from a quicksilver G4. w00t Macs!

I'd wear biking shorts for races. JUst like if I was a triathlete I would wear speedos for races. I would NOT wear speedos for street everyday riding.

The bike shorts are meant for racing (duh, because they are purpose built for racing).....just like speedos are meant for racing. Get it?

They give you a small aerodynamic edge....just like low spoke count wheelsets, etc......

The same fools that say you "need" biking shorts are the same fools that say that you need at least ultegra or some ******** $850 Kysrium wheelset (cuz it's strong...like regular 36 spokers aren't strong enough?) to enjoy riding a bike (IT IS JUST A LIE TOO). And don't get me started about the "grouppo" thing.....because that is the biggest scam in cycling (That being said I ride DA and ultergra.....LOL.....but noobys don't need this stuff).

That's exactly my point. At least somebody here is being honest.

I'm trying not to laugh at this.....but wearing shorts has nothing to do with your skill or speed. All it proves is that you have been around long enough to be "peer pressured" into wearing them. I'm stronger than that.....and a proud individualist.

P.S. Most group rides are too slow for me anyway. Everybody gets all pissy if you start going fast.....by the time they finish the ride I would have done it, driven home and showered already. Sheesh!!!!

You'll find my comments about shorts in this thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/81090-why-do-you-wear-cycling-shorts.html and would appreciate being able to only have to read ONE thread about the pros/cons about shorts.

I know it's not nice to judge a book by it's cover but my experience with roadies is that their cycling gear and equipment does help me decide whether I'm willing to ride with them or not. I'll hardly ever hook up with a lone cyclist on the road simply because there is a good chance that their cycling goals are not the same as mine and they might not have the skill set to ride safely in a group. For example, aerobars can be good indicators as to whether the cyclist is used to riding in a group (ie, not blowing off the front when they get there, etc..). I'm willing to risk that every now and then but I most certainly will not hook up with a lone cyclist wearing gym shorts. It's a big warning sign that this guy is some yahoo out on the road. If I apply those rules to what I know about 5311, my group would just wave as we pass by. And yes, I said as we pass by because six strong guys can keep a very fast pace over many, many miles while a solo rider cannot keep up with that pace--no matter how strong you might think you are.

It seems I'm not the only one with that opinion.

Bottom line is do what you want but if your goals are to ride with a group and have some training buddies, don't expect to hook up with them spontaneously on the road if you're wearing gym shorts. But that doesn't seem to be a goal of yours like you said so keep doing what you're doing. It's working.

Feh. I'm not looking for an aerodynamic edge and I'm certainly not looking to present myself as a racer or conform to their tribe. Look at my user ID for gosh sakes.

Have you ridden any distance with a good pair of bike shorts? Denying that there are tangible benefits for the vast majority of cyclists riding long distances is just plain wrong.

You keep saying that a "good saddle" negates the need for cycling shorts yet you never reveal the name of that magical saddle. Why not?

Oh, and BTW, there's no so such thing as a "grouppo". If it's Italian and you're pretentious it's a "gruppo", otherwise it's just a component group.

53 - First off, you are a dork - plain and simple. Get off the computer and get on the school bus, you're late for the 10th grade.

Secondly, your fascination with other people's decisions smites of mental illness. Get some help.

Evidently not all of them though, eh? I guess I could say the same thing. So do the rides that are hard for you. Listen up! "Step away from the keyboard!" Alas, you're just a troll so we're all just wasting bandwidth.
