Kickstand Preferences???

Just wondering what everyone thinks about the age old kickstand material debate. I'm leaning toward steel myself, figure it better for dampening earth vibrations even though I'll have to wipe it down occasionally. 53-11, you've been riding for quite a while, what's your preference? Ever run a Thomson machined kickstand?

Laggard 01-02-05 06:16 PM

Don't have one. Don't need one. I RIDE my bike and hang it up while at home.

LordOpie 01-02-05 06:21 PM

I ride a steel bike so I can just drop the fooker on the ground -- yes, non-drivetrain side -- when I'm done. Kickstands are for carbon weenies!

I dont see why so many folks dont like kickstands. I miss my kickstand :(. It bothers me when i want to work on the thing or park the bike somewhere i have to lean it against something rather than just go and stand. Some people ***** when you lean your bike against their house

Kickstands are very handy, but on my road bike i would'nt use it enough to justify the added weight. On my mountain bike though, it's great to have.

I KICK my bike over then STAND right next to it and pose.

What a kickstand... hey I need one for my jekyll and they are not made :(

Road bike -- NEVER! (Unless it was full carbon 110 and weighed 50 grams !)

You guys are worried about kickstands? Bah... you should be more concerned about reflectors on your $500 wheelset. I've got mine. Big bright orange ones plus the kickstand not to mention the tassles coming off my handlebars. Oh.. that reminds me, I need to replace that card I have snapping the spokes on my back wheel. It got wet yesterday and it doesn't make any noise now.

You need to get the new ti card made by Litespeed. Weather proof, 18.467321 grams, can be lazer etched with you own picture (only $144 extra), and has a nifty carbon fiber QR - so it can be released when climbing - on the desent, a flip of the switch and Brrrrraaappp!
Unfortinatly I don't use mine - gets in the way of my kickstand.

WTF....is there actually such a thing as a CF kickstand? The absurdity of the concept makes me want one.

DogBoy 01-03-05 10:07 AM

I use an AL kickstand on my commuter, and its weight is not noticeable due to the weight of the 2 batteies for my lights, the rear rack, and the 20 lbs of clothes/books etc that I carry around on the bike. ie, who cares about weight? It was the cheapest kickstand I could find. ($3)

webist 01-03-05 11:56 AM

Don't use one.

jlin453 01-03-05 12:15 PM

Saying "don't use one" without looking at all the different ways people use their bikes is silly.

On another forum, someone was asking about buying a motorcycle and I convinced the guy to take the kickstand of his future scooter :D

He took me so seriously that I was afraid and PMed him that I was just teasing.

unlike other trolls in the past, steathman is really getting on my nerves. his posts aren't particularly funny, they're just annoying. If I put him on my ignore, will the whole thread that he creates be invisible?

just the posts he posts will say "post is blocked, click here to unblock username" but if someone quotes him you can see what he says.

I find his posts funny, he's probably the only genius in the world to think about a carbon fiber kickstand.

Oh, He is not so bad. I think he has a good sense of humor.

Man, I think my LBS ripped me off. I never go a kick stand on my bike. But if I bought one at Wal-mart they'd have one. I also didn't get reflectors on the bike, nor on the wheels. It didn't even come with pedals!!!

But in all seriousness, I've never acutally seen a good quality kickstand, though I'd never consider it.
