Crash In Leading Group - New York 5 Boros Bike Tour
Rode the "New York 5 Boros Bike Tour" today.
32,000 cyclists riding 40 miles on closed streets in New York City. I wasn't a very fast ride, but it was quite nice.
I was in the leading group right behind the convoy of police cars, and about 8 miles from the end ...and CRASHED at about 22mph!
It was a tight group, and 3 people in front of me came down - I believe because of a wheel touch. I managed to swerve around them, but the guy behind me wasn't able to stop in time and took me down with him - then someone came over me. I think 8 people came down. Had to walk 4 miles back to my hotel, because the SAG wagon was more than an hour away and there are no subway stations in that area. So my knee and elbow are a bit banged up and I'll be pretty bruised in the morning.
Worst - my bike's rear wheel looks like a Pringle - it's buckled out of recognition.
Was anyone here in 5-boros the ride? Or were you in the leading group, and perhaps involved in the crash?

My guess is that was one of many crashes that day.

Edit: glad you're (relatively) OK, OP. Sounds like it could be wheel upgrade time.

Because TD has a huge number of branches in NYC. In fact, most people here have no idea it's a Canadian bank.
And yes, it's a godawful ride unless you can get there super early and go off the front. But even then you just paid $75+ for a 2 hour ride (albeit thru the whole city). If you are in the middle, expect to wait over 10 minutes standing still to get thru chokepoints like bridges.

I haven't live in NA for quite some time so I was unaware that TD Bank had enough market presence in the area to justify the promotional expense. Now it makes sense.

and you might even be lucky enough to find some water at one of their rest stops. never did it, advise people not to, and the ones who have done it anyway come back saying they're not glad they did it and they'll never do it again.

I did that ride once with my fiance 2 years ago.
we averaged i think 6mph, most of it walking. it's a great event but we were constantly dodging novice riders.

So we return to my pal's SUV @ about 10AM on Saturday morning, where we had parked on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, cycled down to Brooklyn for the the 45+ race in Prospect Park, and then returned to drive back out to NJ. A woman is waiting for our parking spot, and she says 'are you doing that big bike race tomorrow guys?'. We quickly realize she is talking about the Five Boro Bike Tour and we all give her the T.L. Jones Virtual Facepalm.

They bought out Commerce Bank about 3 years; Commerce had quite a few branches, so TD went from relatively unknown (in NYC) to major player overnight.

I was at work and someone, in another conversation, was expressing concern that a co-worker might be held up by the bike race near Tribeca... Me, "bike race near Tribeca? They don't have bike races in Tribeca. What are you talking about?" They pulled it up online and at which point I gave them a slightly more scornful look than Mr. Jones, above.

Yes and now the iconic Boston Garden (well new Boston Garden after the old one was torn down, renamed the Fleet Center and then bought by TD bank) is now called the TD Bank (Boston) Garden.

Riding like its 1990
Wow. What some people do just to ride their bikes. Bet half the attendees did think they were in a "bicycle cycling race".
