Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can anyone suggest a good road tire?

I somehow cut my back tire yesterday and find myself in need of a new one. My bike has Hutchinson Fusion tires althought the one on the back is not tubeless so I don't believe the front one is either. I'm looking for something for rides generally of up to 50 miles although I hope at some point to be able to take part in longer rides. I only ride in dry conditions, I never take my bike out when it's wet or if it there seems to be a good chance of rain. I'd like to keep the price below $100 if possible. If you have any suggestions, I'd certainly appreciate it.

$100 per tire? GOod luck! No, i'm kidding.

Conti GP4000S - https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/roa...re/CONTTYRF321 ($36 if you buy 2)
Michelin Pro4 - https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/roa...re/MICHTYRF209 ($35 if you buy 2)

Not sure what shipping is but that's damn reasonable.

From my experiences I've found the Michelin Krylion Carbon is incredibly durable but still rolls well. They don't make it anymore, but I'm pretty sure the Pro4 series is the replacement. For more specific purposes the Vittoria Rubino Pro is a fine all-weather road tire, and the Mavic Yksion combo is fine for fine weather. (Yksion can take turn better than the others though).

I've had very few flats on all three with thousands of miles.

Weight/speed/puncture resist = Schwalbe Ultremo ZX
High Durability = Continental GP4000s(slow)
Weight/speed/comfort = Vittoria Open Corsa EVO CX(high flat probability)
Hard-to-mount-but-fast = Michelin Pro3/4 Race

I agree this would be a good tire for the OP and you can still find them: https://www.jensonusa.com/!6qiHWqF0yf...medium=organic

The new version is the Pro4 Endurance but they go for more: https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/238...p=320%20MIN042

Is it made of spun sugar?

+1 on never riding when it's wet. I loathe riding in the rain. Luckily it's very easy to avoid riding in the rain locally. I vote for continental 4000s and am surprised at the "slow" comment.

I just replaced my tires with 25mm GP4000s tires from Ribble. I did a 32 mile ride on them yesterday and it's remarkable how much smoother they are at 90/95 psi f/r compared to my old 23mm tires (which were not garbage tires by any means, they were Vredestein Fortezzas).

I couldn't decide between 25mm and 23mm, especially because my frame is very tight in the rear. The 25mms are very close to the frame, but they ride so nice, I don't think I'll bother to go back to 23s.

I also prefer 25 cm tires and put on a set of 25 cm Ultra-Gatorskins (now called Hardshells), in January. The mileage shown below has been flat free and they are extremely smooth riding. They are a bit heavier than some other tires, so if you're a weight whinny, they aren't for you. I have read, on several posts and other forums, that they don't handle well in the rain. I hate riding in the rain, but here in Florida, I have been caught by rain while riding and I have not found any truth to that statement.

A pretty well kept secret is the Ritchey Race Slick.

Tom Ritchey has a habit of making no nonsense, quality parts at a decent price. We've been using them on our 50+ Scott CR1 Pro and Addict rental bikes for the past year, and they've worked great. They hold up well, they don't seem to get as many cuts, and they roll nicely. And we haven't found a defective one after using 200 or so. $29.95 for the Comp, $39.95 for the WCS.

I have a question for you: how did you find the Hutchinson Fusions?

I'm currently looking to pick up a set on Performance Bike to replace my GP4000. You make it sound like it would explode if ridden in the rain or over 50 miles.

I bought a set of 23s along with my 25s, and I have no idea what I'm going to do with them now. They ride really nice, but the 25s are like riding on a cloud. I'm totally sold on the Conti 4000s either way.

I rode 20 miles on the 23s on Thursday afternoon, and I've put 65 miles on the 25s over the last two days. The 25s are great at reducing vibration.

Lower your front to 85 and the rear to 95. You'll love it.
