cracked carbon frame?
I was cleaning my bike today and notices this "line" running up the back of the seat tube. I can't really feel anything, but the line is there. If the bike weren't white, I wouldn't even notice it. I flipped the bike upside down and snapped a pic. Also marked the area on a side pic. Just seems like a strange place for a cracked frame.
Thoughts? http://www.watsonfx.com/crack.jpg http://www.watsonfx.com/roubaix_side.jpg |
take it in for inspection by a specialized authorized dealer. Is the line a crack in the paint? a shadow? dirt?
are you the original owner? |
Cancer.

are you the original owner? I keep every thing, so I am going to take the receipt in and have the LBS look at it. |
keep us posted.
i've had great experience with specialized warranty. if you get a warranty replacement, ask for an upgrade to the sl3 frame! its awesome! |
Get it checked out...
I had my 2010 Raleigh Team SL frame looked at last week by the Raleigh rep. for a possible crack in the non-drive side chain stay. Turned out to be a hairline crack in the paint/clearcoat, and was told to keep and eye on it and let him know if it grows... |
The problem with those cracks is that you dont know if its the frame or the paint unless you sand or peel the paint in the area in question.
TO me looks like a crack in the paint. |
dont worry, Specialized will sue that potential crack because it clearly rips off their "sloping" design from their top tubes.

I definitely agree with the others that you should have it inspected but I wouldnt sweat it much.

kewl bike.
i like those wheels. still waiting for november wheels to stock up on their white FSW23s. >_< |
Yeah, it's a crack in the paint. CF doesn't crack all by itself - cracks come from impact or compression and don't happen in a straight line like that.
|
In that location it's certainly possible to be a scratch in the paint.

Thanks guys....I agree that it is odd to see a straight line crack. Even when scratching my fingernail across the area, I can't feel any imperfection in the surface, so I really think whatever it is appears to be under the clear coat. I'l have it checked out. My LBS is great, so I know they'll check it out and take care of it if it is a problem.
Also thanks for the compliments on the bike. It is a perfect bike for an old guy (46) like me. It isn't so aggressive that it is uncomfortable, but it is still a light and fast bike. Seems everyone in my riding groups are doing blacked out matte black bikes, so I kind of like the white/white look. |
Here's a pic of a carbon crack over a white paint. It's obviously into the resin, yours is not.

when specialized sold you the bike thru the LBS they had already factored the cost of replacement...your LBS or specialized wont loose a single penny of profit from a frame exchange...in fact your LBS will profit a little bit... :)
|
Duct tape it, but seriously take it in to the LBS to inspect it.
