Fix front wheel vs buying a new Wheelset
 

I was involved in a crash 2 weeks ago...long story short. My mechanic told me today i should replace my front rim.

Wheelset is Ksyrium Elite 2010, bought from a friend for $300.00 never crashed, pretty sweet deal.

Now im debating between a couple of scenarios:

1. buy rim, nipples, and spokes, pay for rebuild

2. buy front wheel

3. fork out money and buy some nice ass wheels (not prefered)

#2 or 3. Sorry. Mavic is proprietary system of nipples, rims and spokes. The repair parts will have to come from Mavic through an authorized mavic dealer and then you have to trust the "builder" who is rebuilding it. It will end up costing more than a new front will and with Mavic - they are a dime a dozen. Go find an identical replacement online through ebay.

It depends on what you are ridding for. If you want to be fast and have lightness in a wheel set and can afford it, GO FOR THE GUSTO. I don't think I would repair the wheel in any case. Good luck, these kind of decisions are always fun.

Thanx guys. My lbs is an authorized mavic dealer, and the mechanic is well known for his wheel skills. I trust his judgement on this. The buyer for the store will let me know prices, buying a new wheel seems like the most straight forward desicion here.

The back of my head is telling me "upgrade those wheels!". But i know there's no need since this wheels have served me well and are pretty light.

I recently busted a couple of cheap-ass spokes on my cheap-ass set of Alex R500's. I spent a couple hundred bucks on a nice, discounted set of wheels instead of fortifying a cheap-ass set of wheels. The Alex rims are still in fine shape, so I am going to have my local wheelbuilder build them up with some decent hubs and new spokes. They will be a spare set, unless owning custom made wheels of any kind turn out to ride better than store-bought.

I am sure Psimet may have something to say about this, or at least his satisfied customers :-)

I believe #2 is going to be the cheapest. Buy it TODAY and get the mp3 warranty for $1.

I discovered this last year.

Don't think I'll be buying Mavics again...or any factory wheelset for that matter. It just violates my personal philosophy to own a set of perfectly good, perfectly useless hubs.
