Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Personally even two tooth shifts piss me off......Back when I first got into this I wanted a triple with 11-21, but then I heard all this mumbo jumbo about chain rub and dropped chains so I was running a little wider 11-23 on my 53/39. Now that I have a compact and I want to run 11-21 with it once my 11-23 wears out (I'm using 11-23 cuz I have them lying around). The compact is awesome.....I have 50/33 rings and I think it shifts like the bomb (with ultegra FD).

The 17T difference is no biggie. You can't discern the difference in shifting from a regular 53/39 double except the gear reduction is greater. It's fast and positive.

But leave the rest of us alone that use triples. Enough already. "Chacon a son gout" - to each his own taste.
Haha.....I love Galen_52657 as misguided as he is.

I can't wait to "Noob" him with my soon to be bad-ass Campy Record drivetrain with Compact and 11-21. He'll mock me as usual that I have to use a compact.....LOL....even though my superior sprinter's set-up has a taller 33-21 than his girly 39-25.

Definition of "Noobing": When a less experienced (though superiorly gifted athlete....ie, 53-11 ATW ) defeats a veteran rider in a contest of cycling skill.

I'm ribbing Galen right now....... he knows it. Actually I think Galen would be a lot of fun to ride with.

This has been a very interesting thread. Thanks divekrb. I would like to add a bit of information to the back and forth issue of what Lance rides and some of the comments about weight. I had read a short interview piece with whoever the Postal head mechanic is (was?). He was responding to a question about which bike Lance would be using for an upcoming stage. In the mechanic's response, he stated that the bike that to be used wasn't the lightest in their stable, but it was the one that Lance was fastest on.

you missed my point on having a triple... this ride is the only time i use my triple w/12-21 rear cassette (for 53-11 the closer gearing made riding so much nicer w/o the big gaps of the 12-26 that came w/the bike) but, why torture yourself on a double if you can finish the ride quicker and stronger on a triple.

Side note: for those that rides hills alot do you count the mileage up and down the hills or just up since you coast most of the way down a big hill?

Of course you count the down side mileage. Gotta have some reward besides a cheap endorphin high for getting up the steep SOB. Besides, most of my time is spent getting up the hill, so I figure the same mileage spent faster down the hill all balances out--sorta. . .

I hope they realize the side note was a joke the down hills are the only reason I went back to the Six Gap Century. 20 minutes of down hill coming off of one peak and hit speeds over 50mph. is better than riding the flats here is s. ga. anyday.

I definately count my downhill mileage. When you pedal as hard as you can on the downhills why would you not count it? When not pedaling you are still working negotiating curves and obstacles aren't you?

*edit* Yup, realized it was a joke, or at least was hoping it was.

I'm happy that you have the money for a light bike, but the people who really need light bikes get them from their sponsors, so I think you're probably just an elitist.
As for marketing hype being defined by consumer need, well, I'm happy you live in that world, must be a cool place. Coca Cola is a great example of a company that spends a great deal to manufacture a percieved need for their product. Where would human civilization be without brown sugar water?
Anyway, maybe the next time you put your 15 pound bike on top of your car, so you can drive 50 miles and ride 10, you'll get thirsty on the way and stop for a Coke and a Big Mac on the way. I'm sure one of the "Financially Challenged" would be happy to take your order.
I hope that one day, if I'm financially capable of owning a CF bike, I'll wake up in the morning and thank God for how blessed I am, instead of pissed off at all the jealous poor. Congratulations on being so crass, Divekrb!
Sour grapes. Who cares what he buys. You want a CF bike???? Forget him...go get your own. It's the end of the season with plenty of used CF (and new looking) bikes out there at very good prices.

Climbing up the hill takes a lot more energy than riding the distance of the ascent and descent on a flat road, so of course a rider should count the descent. Besides, it's time in the saddle, and not all hills have straightforward downhill descents.

Descents are boring

Well people like their massive 3T tooth gaps around here too much.....besides adding that 30T chainring is too much of a weight penalty for most

In all honesty I have never ridden a triple so there may be mechanical glitches I don't know about......chainrub because of wider BB vs low profile one for double.

Compact crank is nice because is has wide range chainrings.....but low profile BB like a regular double. That's why mine doesn't rub I guess.

Maybe it was a bad gluing job.....

P.S. I liked your other avatar
Kind of like blow outs and tires rolling of clinchers might be a bad installation job (including overinflating the tire).

If it had come off, he would have simply slid out, aluminum and carbon giving rather poor traction. Verified by pictures of the bike and video of the crash. The announcers got it wrong.

Additional Facts: Tubulars are they the choice of the majority of pro teams, especially in brutal (on tire) races like Paris Roubaix.

Jose Beloki did lock up the back wheel and i actually weirdly just watched the accident on the 2003 tdf dvd. If you watch his tire did come off the rim. and he was sliding on his rim. IM telling you watch the video again, watch the tdf not the crappy comp one. That is the only one that i dont agree with.

An interesting trivia about Yugo. They are the only car company ever to be put out of business because the factory was bombed during a war.

Otherwise I respond to their "spare change" solicitations with "Oh...you mean money I wasn't planning on using? Nope." Then I'll make them do funny dance for a twenty. Did you look up "tongue in cheek" yet ? Methinks not. I know it's hard to stay focused in a dorm after a few bong hits. Keep working on that reading comprehension.
geez, man. you seem a little lonely. you should make a public appearance or two and get your ass kicked. at least you'd be getting out of the house and all. no offense.
