Best wheelset that can be had for under $500

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I love my Shimano WH-6700, which I got from Nashbar for $400. The WH-RS80s use the same hub and a snazzier carbon rim and can be found for about $100-$150 more on EBay. Not sure they're worth the extra money, though.

I ride a set of Aksium Race, they ride great and stay true quite well...I am a little bigger than you @~210, and have had great performance out of a set I picked up. It would leave you with enough change to get something else nice for yourself like quality lights or a Garmin, etc.

It is... First of all, drop of nearly 200 grams from just rims is huge, also, it seems to be stiffer from my experience.
Liked mine so much, I ended up getting 50mm version of RS80 as well Could be minute difference for some but huge for some others of course

Are these not the same wheels sold by Performance as Forte Titans? There have been more than a few threads here on BF saying this, IIRC.

Whatever you buy, 20/24 is probably not ideal at your weight. Try 24/28 and up.

I think they are more or less the same parts but are not assembled by the same people.

Actually Boyd wheels pretty much use the components I would choose if I was building my own wheels.

I had Williams 19s and they were great. I've also had PSIMET's and they're great too. I have friends who swear by the Forte Titans, which can be found super cheap when on sale. Save some $$$. get the Titans, and spend the rest on beer.

+1. I can't speak for other wheels, but the 30X's are fantastic all-around wheels that hold up very well.

Titans have been discontinued. But there have been reports of people still finding them in Performance stores.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm probably going to get boyd vitesse 24/28, but might be cheap and get boyd rouleur 24/28 for $160 less.

Was there ever a consensus on the Reynolds Solitude SE wheelset? Can be found under $500 and are 1600g.

I was looking at a set the other day but didn't know how they'd be for a 190-200lb rider.

I have a set of these, as well. From 2010. The owner of my LBS describes them as bombproof. After riding about 1800 miles on them I got a decent deal on a set of 2005 Ksyrium Equipes off eBay. I can't say I notice a huge difference, but I have broken a spoke twice on the rear wheel (Equipe). Never broke a spoke on the Aksiums.

Regarding paying more for lighter wheels, when you weigh 200 lbs (like me), it seems like there is a problem of diminishing returns. I value long wheel life and low maintenance over other qualities.

i thought about doing that, but kind of scared to buy wheels online. Not much stuff as far as bikes on craigslist around here. So wouldn't be able to see them in person before buying. Would have to be Ebay.

Yeah i've thought about that, not positive that i will get the boyds yet. Sometimes i am not fiscally responsible though.

Titans are a very solid wheelset, under 1770g too (i believe...).

use them for commuting, and rode on a rear flat for about half a mile (out of saddle). luckily the tire stayed on.

and the wheel was still perfectly true. i would definitely pick some up as a back up wheelset, or everyday use.
