I've had two blow outs at high speed. the first one was on a tandem going over 45mph. I hit rock and the front tire popped. but I only lost 50% pressure...I run two innertubes on my tandem (I drilled a second hole for the additional innertube). I pulled over, checked the tire and inflated the one innertube that still had air and left the flat innertube in place, changed it after the ride. the second blowout was at about 35 mph coming down mt. tam and hit a potpole...the tubular went flat and I grabbed my rear brake...came to a stop just in time.

I had two blowouts on downhill’s going about 40. Both times I happened to be going almost straight. I had no damage to the rim. After looking at the tires I found out why.
Both tires were 70x23 with Kevlar belts. When going straight the Kevlar belt flattened out and made the tire stick out past the rim on both sides evenly. On those tires you can feel the location of the Kevlar belt by hand. It saved my new Ksyriums both times. The Kevlar belt has another hidden benefit, if you go straight enough it can protect your rims. cool. |

I have not had a blow out but plenty of "blown out tubes" Usually caused but a nice hard drop into a pothole at 28+... not pretty.

At 38-40 downhill, sweeping right turn couldn't avoid debris and punctured the front which was hissing loudly and was flat in a couple of revolutions. I got on the brakes with moderate pressure and put weight back. The clincher flattened out and I didn't notice any rim damage ... just put the spare tire in and continued.
