Ahh, there's simply no accounting for taste (or lack of it).

I like black cranks on black bikes. Anything else is case by case.

FrenchFit 05-23-12 08:26 AM

All the above, and many modern CF bikes have a 'war machine' look to them. Chrome/silver is simply too "pretty".

Those black/red/white color schemes, like Wilier's, just give me the creeps.

I have silver velo orange seatpost and silver ultegra cranks on my touring bike.

Silver-lovers: I need a new stem for the bike with the matte silver Shimano crank. I have a stem sourced, but it is currently a 26.0 clamp. I want to go 31.8, but now am not sure if since the bars will be wrapped, how important it is to get a silver handlebar.

Brake calipers are silver, and seatpost will soon be silver. The saddle is black, so the tape must remain black. Methinks a silver bar may be overkill. Wheels are in the building process and are black low-profile rims with silver spokes/nipples.

Am I over-thinking this?

Your thoughts.

Silver bar unless you are going carbon fiber.

I just picked up a 2012 Jamis Quest yesterday. I need to take some of my own photos (before it gets dirty :) ). It looks even better in person than in the web pics. I got some silver MKS touring pedals to go with it. The bike shop gave me a choice of different colored bottle cages. I opted for white, to go with the graphics, but now I'm wondering if I should have gone with shiny silver.

Interesting choice with black rims. I prefer to match seat post, headset, stem, crank, brakes, bars, hubs/spokes when I can, but I might be a bit OCD on this.

My thinking was I have a black and silver cages at home already, so if I was getting these for free anyways I could always try them out. If anything I could use them on my wife's bike. I want to keep the retro vibe going so I think I'll put on the silver ones and see how that works.

I got some silver for ya:

I love the silver bar tape ravenmore! Who makes that?

RT 05-25-12 08:57 AM

I had talked myself into finishing off the bike in black, but with the custom wheel build (I am recycling the rims, that's why they are black) being silver-spoked (black spokes would be 2x as much), your pictures and feedback hav steered me back into Neo-Retroville.

raven, digging the tape, but what color is your saddle? If you went with black tape, would you go silver bar? My trouble is in finding a decently priced 31.8 silver bar.

ravenmore 05-25-12 09:35 AM

The tape is made by F.U.B.A.R. - you can get it on ebay or on their site. It's cheap and very durable. My seat is a carbon railed Toupe which is black with silver accents.

Nice. I found some solid chrome Deda tape for $9.00, but don't want to commit to that much of a mirror finish.

I'm an equal opportunity offender:

Speaking of other things I want to stick on my new bike...I have a road morph frame pump. Either I have to give up a bottle cage or strap it on with what amounts to zip ties. Does anyone know of a pump that uses the bottle cage mounts but still would allow a bottle cage to go on? I used to have one in a smaller version of a Topeak pump that would do that.

blacksquid 05-25-12 12:53 PM

I used Ritchey Classic stem, bars, and seatpost on my Pegoretti. Goes well with alloy Campy Record. Only problem is that the paint comes off pretty easily. My frame takes a 29.4 seatpost and the Classic only comes in 27.2. Thomson doesn't make a 29.4 Seatpost in silver either.

Do you still have it? If so, post pics, pls :D

In my pic on page one of the green Surly Pacer, I have a Lezyne Micro Floor Drive pump. It mounts between the bottle cage and the frame.

Even comes in silver! The mount goes under the bottle cage so you just bolt the cage down right over the mounting bracket. I have the medium size in black because my bike is black. The link was just for demonstration purposes; you can get a lezyne pump at any number of places.

That's perfect. It almost looks too nice to use. :) I like the tag line from the listing too..."Shiny finish will impress your friends and blind your foes".

Yes, but will it increase your average speed?

Here you go. Not the best pics but they'll do for now. It's kinda hard to tell but the blue lettering matches the headset, Cane Creek 110, and seatpost collar. The bar tape, HandleBra, has orange stitching.
