Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rip around sidewall?

Hey,

Noticed this on my tires today. Pretty much the whole way around the tyres, both front and back, and both left and right, is a slight rip/tear that is starting. Have Specialized Mondo Tyres from 09 (Though hardly used).

I'm guessing they need replacing now? Anyone have any ideas what caused it?

Any ideas on a good new tyre? Looking at the Specialized S Works Turbo Race, have only heard good things about it, but if anyone has better suggestions or a cheaper one that isn't too different or equivalant to what I have now it'd be much appreciated!

EDIT: Also, looking at these (https://www.evanscycles.com/products/...-tyre-ec028248), purely because I think they'll look nicer (Shallow, but who doesn't want their bike looking sweet?!). Will these perform alot worse for the money, they're 127tpi as opposed to the 220tpi on the S works. If anyone has any suggestions for decent red/black red/white etc tyres that'll perform well then that'd be even better!

Cheers!

A couple pics makes it look like your brake pad may be rubbing the tire near the rim

Cheers for the quick reply!

Just double checked and there's definitely not rubbing of the brakes on the tyre. The tyre just literally seems to be ripping off, seems like a piece of rubber/material that is holding the bead in place is tearing away (Not sure if tyres are constructed like that, so sorry if I'm wrong!)

I would replace them. Old and started to tear? Throw away.
I am Continental man, so...

It's not a tear.

There is a cloth piece wrapped around the tire bead called the chafer strip. Your is also partly molded into the sidewall. This is coming away from the sidewall.

You will start to find random threads coming off your tire.

It is not structural. Replace them only if you feel like it.
