Do some hill repeats, or ride a lot of hilly routes, and you'll make it up the hill sooner or later.

Partly my fault because I did a sprint on what I thought was the top of the hill only to find out there was more after the curve. Wasted too much energy and I couldn't keep going.
Just got into road biking, but I am quickly improving. The route I do is all hills.

Limits are temporary.

Throw the stick!!!!
18% certainly sucks, 25% is much worse though.
Now, time for some intervals.

I found my limits at that grade a few times last Saturday at the Arcadia's Brute ride in Wisconsin. I still need to shed my winter weight plus 5 pounds and I should be good to go.

Found mine on a road up to the Thomas Hill Standpipe in Bangor. I made it about 2/3 of the way up. I was standing on the pedals in my 30-28 gear going nowhere. I managed to unclip before falling over and walked threst of the way.

I do 23.8%(for 7 city blocks) daily, it was tough @ first, now it's a breeze.
I can do it 3 times before I get a little winded, & I never have to tell my legs to STFU.
Embrace the hills, you can't avoid them unless you live in the Prairies.

When I ride in Richmond the headwind is crazy, but I love it!!!
(Below sea level, right next to where river meets the sea, formerly all farmland.)
BTW:
I have family who moved here from Chi-Town, they love it here.
I need to go to Chi-Town to visit all the good restaurants. I know I'll come back 20 lbs over weight.
I need some of the Chi-Town Pizza! I luv me some pie!!!

I have always gotten up steep grades, probably because my bike has a triple.
The one time I could not go up a hill no matter how hard I tired was when I tried going up a 30% grade(private road) on a folding bike. Really want to try that road on my road bike now.
And don't worry, soon that 18% grade will be easy

15 pounds off (according to analyticcycling anyway) will bring that 5mph crawl into the 300W range for me which is hard but doable.
