Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New clipless pedals for my new bike?

I need some new clipless pedals for my shiny cool new Italian bike, which is all carbon, in white and red, with a full Ultegra gruppo. For road riding, plenty of climbing, no racing.

On my current bike I am riding Look Keo Classic (red) with grey (4.5°) cleats. Which are fine, but I am looking at something lighter and cooler to go with the bike. Weight matters a little, but primarily they must look awesome

I am considering Shimano Ultegra (to match the gruppo), maybe even the carbon model. Can't see spending the extra for the Dura Ace models though. (Can I use the same cleats on Shimanos as for my Looks?)

Also considering Look. I have been happy with the Keos, and the Keo 2 Max in white would look cool. The carbon versions are in budget too.

Not interested in Speedplay. Not that this will stop the 41 from suggesting them.

So, any recommendations, or other suggestions? TIA.

Time look the best. There are good deals on the iclick and iclick ii. Reviews are mixed. Speedplay and eggbeaters get a lot of love around here but aren't cool looking. Shimano look ok, the base ultegra is more pedal than you need.

You can use the same shoes depending on what pedal you choose but pedal cleats are not interchangeable between manufactures.

Why are you not interested in Speedplay? Just curious but my recommendation is Speedplay Zero.

Ah, but I thought Shimano was compatible with Look - is it not? Would I need different cleats if I went with Shimano on my new bike, and kept the Keos on my old bike?

Mainly just because it is different - I am inclined to ride what I am used to. But also for compatibility - I only have one pair of shoes, and my current bike has Keos. I have heard they need at least a little maintenance, which the Shimano/Look do not, so that turns me off too.

Ah, now I look more, I can see that you need Look Keo cleats for Look Keo pedals, and Shimano SPD cleats for Shimano SPD pedals. They were interchangeable a while back, when Shimano first released pedals, but now they are no longer compatible.

Good to know!

Sounds like I may need a new pair of shoes too. Or at least I now have a good excuse for new shoes!

Okay, well, I guess I still have the same question, though compatibility is no longer a consideration. Thanks ArchEtech for the heads up!

I am running the Look Keo Blades (carbon) on my new Madone 5.2 and they are awesome, very easy to get used to and the clipping in/out is very precise and solid. My wife has them on her bike too and is totally comfortable with them after only a few rides (and she hadn't even been on a bike in 20+ years) !!

As a long time Shimano pedal user, I think you can't go wrong with the new carbon fiber Ultegra pedals.
