What do you do on rainy days?

Hey everyone, today was the start of what looks to be a terrible weekend. I took a rest day yesterday, and so today I was hoping to go for a nice long ride to get my legs moving again. Instead, it rained..so I just went to a few LBS's and bought some accessories and are dying to use them. But it's supposed to rain tomorrow too! I was on the edge of insanity because I just want to ride my bike in some decent weather. And I don't have an indoor trainer.

So what do you do on rainy days when you can't ride?

banerjek 06-02-12 09:55 PM

If people didn't ride on rainy days out here, they'd hardly get out most of the year.

What's the issue with getting wet? You realize the same thing happens when you take a shower...

If the weather turns me off to riding I usually head to the garage and lift weights or do some Muy Thai practice on the heavy bag.

Got some Rain X for my glasses and a rain jacket from my LBS today. The jacket is just to keep the mud off my back. Ill be hitting the road 6:30 am rain or shine.

Lmfao!!!

I ride in the rain, today was really bad it was raining buckets,& hailing, I was soaked just getting out of the car so I passed. I had a bunch of errands to do anyways.
I have proper rain really doesn't faze me. I'd rather ride in the rain than drive or bus.
Days like this are usually trainer days if I. really need to log some KMs.

Funny.

Here in the desert, riding in the rain is a treat. We only get to do it a few times a year, and I look forward to it. When I lived in the South, it rained almost every day in summer, and if you couldn't handle it, you couldn't ride.
I guess I don't see what the problem is here.

I'm not sure if this is a trick question or not. If you can't ride what difference does it make if it is rainy or not? Isn't this like asking "what do you do on a sunny day when you can't ride"? If it's rainy out and you can't ride then you don't ride. If it's rainy out and you can ride then you do ride. If it's sunny out and you can't ride then you don't ride. If it's sunny out and you can ride then you do ride.

It is a girl thing banerjek. You and I don't get it but as you see valygrl got it!

patentcad 06-02-12 10:52 PM

I don't understand the question.

Spoiled enough to live in Norcal where rain is only around during spring, and not often.

I stopped riding in the rain when I moved up here and slid out on a slick patch of road that was probably slicked over due to motor oil contaminant. I know it's pretty unusual, but given how little it rains up here, I don't think it's worth the small extra risk of slideouts (most of my rides involved 3000+ ft of climbing and twisty descents) and inconvenience.

Trainer intervals for rainy days for sure. I actually enjoy doing them on rainy days. On sunny days, not so much.

pull out my mountain bike and ride.

canam73 06-02-12 11:40 PM

swedish erotica

esldude 06-02-12 11:56 PM

Hmmm, what are my favorite responses, shopping intervals, oh just too good. Then I come across the Swedish erotica. Never argue with Swedish erotica.

Now being less inventive than these guys, I do rowing on a rowing machine. Similar aerobic workout to a lighter bike ride. A little aerobic workout for the upper body versus the anaerobic workout that weights are. Of course I am more of a slowtwitch guy than a fast twitch guy.

NathanC 06-03-12 12:06 AM

I ride.

caloso 06-03-12 12:18 AM

I ride my other bike. The one that's not made of cotton candy.

Jed19 06-03-12 12:41 AM

Preventive maintenance. The bike needs it or not. That is what I do when it rains.

Machka 06-03-12 12:47 AM

One year, I decided to take rain days off ... use rain days as my rest days. As it happened that year, I rode 40 days in a row before it finally rained, and then another 26 days before it rained again. Got a lot of rides in that year!

Another year, I decided to do the same thing, but that year it rained so much I was resting more than riding. After a couple weeks of that, I acquired some rain riding equipment, and started to ride in the rain.

So ... if I need a rest, a rain day is a great day to take a break. But if I'd rather be out there riding, I'll ride.

krobinson103 06-03-12 03:05 AM

If its not a tropical cyclone or typhoon then I ride. Rain won't stop me.

ThinLine 06-03-12 04:37 AM

Sometimes I ride in it although mostly switch duties to my NordicTrac elliptical.

dougcee 06-03-12 05:34 AM

I don't ride in the rain cause it messes up the bike and my glasses are hard to see thru! :(

EdIsMe 06-03-12 05:58 AM

In light rain I'll still ride. If it's really bad I'll do some lifting instead.
My brother took up the hobby last year of running barefoot in hard rain. He'd just put on some board shorts and go. I'd considered trying it... but not sure if I trust the roads enough to not stomp on glass or something.

simonaway427 06-03-12 06:08 AM

Jump on my cross bike and ride. That rig has seen way worse than a little rain.

EventServices 06-03-12 06:48 AM

You live in Guelph. You're an hour's drive from Forest City INDOOR VELODROME!

If it's cold, I'll find something else to do.
If it's warm, I'll ride.

If I get caught in the rain, no problem.
But it's really hard to start a ride when it's already raining.
