Totally confused regarding pedals / shoes / cleats - advice appreciated!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Totally confused regarding pedals / shoes / cleats - advice appreciated!

I'm a new rider and decided to order some pedals and shoes off nashbar for my Specialized Allez - I ordered Shimano R077 shoes and Shiimano A520 pedals. However, after I hit "send order" I noticed that some while some websites state that the R077 shoe is "best matched with PD-A520" other websites state "usable only with SH40".

What does this mean? Do I have to buy a special cleat? Are the shoes and pedals I ordered compatible?

I realize these are probably basic questions but I'm new to all of this...

The shoes will work with two different cleats.
They'll work with the SPD-SL cleats,

Or the SPD cleats,

The pedals will only work with the SPD cleats.

What cleats did you order?
These are what you'll need for those pedals.

I didn't order cleats (thought they came with the pedal) - so I should just order the cleats you provided the linked for and I should be good to go? Thanks for the response!

When you buy pedals, they'll come with the appropriate cleats, all that's left is finding compatible shoes. There are (primarily) two types of hole configurations: 3-hole or "Look-type" (generally considered "Road") and 2-hole (more frequently used with mountain bikes, but whatever floats your boat). 4-hole Speedplays are pretty popular, too, but easily converted if you have a 3-hole.

So the R077's should work with the A520 pedals I ordered correct?

Yes!!!
The A520 is an SPD pedal.
Your R077 shoes accept SPD or SPD-SL cleats!

The pedal you have ordered is a SPD pedal. You will also need to order the SM-SH40 cleat adapter for everything to work correctly. This is an adapter that will go between the shoe and the cleat that adds a kind of pontoon around the cleat. I have this system and it works well.

Okay, thanks so much! I'll order the SH-40. Also, I have the base model Allez Compact (no sport or whatever) - I bought it to see if I liked it - I already have over 120 miles on it in 3 weeks - really enjoying it.

One follow-up question - do the pedals come with cleats?

You do not NEED these, they are optional. They just make walking a bit easier when you use SPD's on road shoes (the cleats won't touch the ground).
