Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I sell metal fabrication equipment. When not making sales calls in my territory I work from home and, basically, make my own schedule. Interesting work, great pay, and time to ride.

I assume you guys test mechanical properties as well.

I'm a chemist too in case you missed that a couple pages back
We have good control over the amounts of raw materials that go into the process and maintain control of the formulations which are in our QA Manual. We collect samples from the plant on a periodic basis, 24 x 7. We analyze for strength and stiffness by flexing the boards slowly to failure in a calibrated load frame. We are required to maintain specified levels of strength (modulus of rupture) and stiffness (modulus of elasticity) to maintain our compliance to the building codes. We add pigments to the process to achieve the colors we want, and we measure color of the boards with hand-held, visible spectrophotometers. Our primary concern is to maintain control over the formulations so that the products meet the required physical characteristics. With all of the wood and polyethylene, the IR spectrum would be busy, and you are right, there is no unsaturation in the polyethylene for UV.

What do you guys make?

I worked at a plant around 25 miles (as the Hog flies) south of what was once England Air Force base when the Flying Tigers (Hog version) were stationed there. On a lot of occasions, they flew and trained in our area. I was duly impressed with the skill of the drivers and maneuverability of the Hog.

When it occurred that we had visitors in the plant and the Hogs were training, I would look up and say to the visitors, "plant security."

We went to the base and watched when the squadron returned from Desert Storm. Impressive.

I'm retired now, but when I was working I did the same things that you do, until I got my contractor's license and went more into the management side. Before that, though, it was layout, framing forming, stacking roofs, pouring concrete, finish work, cabinetry (building and installing)- anything and everything to do with construction. Commercial, residential, civil- did it all. The last 12 years or so were all really high end residential- $4 mill. and up. When the Silicon Valley and Financial Industries money started coming to the Big Island, there was a colossal building boom in the resort/ gated communities. It's slowed down, now, and the competition is ferocious. Glad that I'm not involved anymore.
But I always felt that the hard physical labor benefited my core strength, and made me a better jock, and pau hana at 3:30 gave me time to get a ride in whenever I wanted. Once I went into management, though, I had to make time to ride a couple of days a week- the hours were way to long. And the core strength deteriorated.

Yes, it's a great job, I don't start my work day until 10:00 AM so I am able to get my workout done on my bike and I still have contact with other LEO's still in the business.

Au and Ag nanoparticles of different size, surface functionalizations, and solvents, although our primary syntheses are aqueous.

Historically there has been a major SBIR/STTR grand-funded research segment of the business, and there still is, but the product side is stepping up big time.

I fabricate and QC alot of our product and do outside analytical services as well as some internal R&D.

kewl. I don't know much about piezoelectrics but i think any kind of energy conversion is cool.

aren't strain gauges in power meters piezoelectric materials? just makes sense to me

Strain gauges are resistors in a voltage divider network, no piezoelectric stuff involved. As the resistors change shape from the stain, they change resistance, changing the voltage.
