What is your "day job" ?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is your "day job" ?

I have been joining group rides with some great guys, but as we talk I realize they are enjoying some physical exertion after a long day at a desk job or a some-what stationary factory job. I work construction, I do roofing, framing, siding... a lot of heavy lifting and climbing ladders. Am I alone out here? What do you do? Do you bike to relax, unwind, exercise, or to work hard for yourself for a change.

I also work construction, but I do all of the purchasing, permits and setup deliveries. I get a lot of windshield time and do enjoy riding to relax from a long day of driving and shopping..
I do get to visit most of the bike shops in the Hampton Roads area while on the road..

Light Rail train operator..18 years. Great seniority allows me to choose what days off I want and what hours I work. Every 4 months I get to choose what hours I work so depending on what time of year it is I choose a shift that enables me to cycle as much as possible.

Senior VP with one of the large Canadian banks. Not much time to ride on weekdays, but the weekends are mine and the 9 weeks vacation a year helps too.

I'm what's left of the old school phone men. Now I do large scale fiber optic infrastructure installs and maintenance. Hang it on poles, pull it through underground duct banks or do whatever it takes to get the cable from point A to point B. Sometimes it's extremely demanding physically but I like the work and being outside.

The latest project I was on, was at one time the largest construction site/project in North America. I quit counting at 150 miles of fiber. After it was finished we got the maintenance contract on it so I took a spot on that team. We're still adding more but now that it's a working steel mill and the IT dept. oversees us as our contract reps, so we do whatever those guys don't want to do. Could be setting up the video conference equipment in a new office, or installing new antennas on the wireless access points over some of the steel processing equipment.

I gotta admit, it's a cool gig for me even though the conditions can be extreme in places there. It's an impressive operation and more than a little interesting to watch.

High school sophomore... But with finals this week, I'll be a junior soon.

..I hate this time of year. I haven't biked since Friday... And before that, I hadn't ridden since Tuesday. So much school work and studying.
