Dressing like a flamboyant superhero is the POINT of all of this. Embrace.

Bibs w/no jersey look totally gay IMO. NTTAWWT, of course.

The socks and sandals have to go, though. There is no excuse, unless those sandals are SPD's.

Hmmmm...I could see 600, maybe 700 miles a week (cause it shows a bit in the calves) but 1000? No way bro!

ben4345 06-07-12 07:01 PM

bibs? Is that what they decided to call a leotard for cyclist?

Homebrew01 06-07-12 07:11 PM

Tuck the shoulder straps into your waistband ... presto, shorts that don't have a butt-crack ... no annoying shoulder straps and you can take normal nature breaks ... best of both.

Buddy saw me in a bib , called it a "onesie".
Told him I was pull off the Borat look!

Nobody mentioned the socks & sandals? Nothing? I realize you have to wait for your eyes to stop burning to see anything else...

I was just going to comment on the socks, & sandals too.

"pull the leg up and pee out the leg hole."
LMFAO!!!

I've seen enough girls remove their bras without taking off their shirts, I knew this would come in handy some day!
:innocent:
I also have a few full zip jerseys I were on long rides, they help with the awkwardness of a "pit stop".

I'll see your Lampre guy and raise you nonplussed bib dude:

Tried that once with bib tights, and it didn't work worth damn.

Seriously.

Are bibs made for people whose bike shorts fall down all the time?

My understanding is that he was the mayor of a town one of the races went through in Europe. He was so excited about the race and his town he dressed the part. Hopefully they wont have a swim meet in his town. "speedo guy"

My understanding/experience is that they eliminate the waist band in shorts/liners which can get uncomfortable on longer rides.

Believe me, I was in the same camp as you guys not too long ago.
Tried my 1st bib, & won't look back, they make riding that much better for me.
I have the padded shorts, but I only use them to train in, they don't feel as comfortable when riding any longer than as hour for me.

Ditto.

Bibs are more comfortable. Do you wear tight lycra cycling gear because you think you look good? People think you look silly, whether you're wearing bibs or shorts. Bibs stop your chammy from riding down and stop the waistband feeling restrictive when you're breathing heavily.

Also, I have never ever had to take off my jersey or remove shoulder straps of bibs to pee. It's stretchy material, just pull the middle bit down. It will stretch far enough.

SPlKE 06-08-12 02:11 PM

I've always figured the straps would be an annoyance after a while.

Since my shorts don't move around, even on long rides, I don't know that I'd benefit from bibs.

island rider 06-08-12 03:01 PM

Much has been said about the benefit of bibs, but let it suffice to say that I know numerous people who have gone from shorts to bibs, I don't know any who have switched back.

- Wear the straps under everything but your HRM strap and base-layer (if any).
- Wear something over the straps.

(Women's bib issues are a bit different, but consult (at your own risk) the Assos catalog or this blog post http://comingthru.com/2010/10/cold-w...-your-friends/ for examples of them being worn)

pepelkod 06-11-12 07:40 AM

I have both. I have used some very nice Castelli and PI bibs. They work, but so do shorts. In fact my cheap performance shorts work fine for me. The big thing is the wear. After a year or two all shorts get frayed between the chamois and leg and they get move to commuting/short rides.

Also, for riding, I wear the bibs over a base layer in the winter. The straps hold the base layer down and makes a warmer ride. Of course I have a jacket over top, so no one knows that I am violating etiquette ;).

I believe there is an allowance for bibs over base layer, but only one. Two layers under the straps would be a major foo-pah.

Re your daughters: until they are grown up, you can expect to look ridiculous to them regardless of what you're wearing.

Re your wife: you're on your own there, but maybe you can think of a relevant, witty remark for the next time she asks if she looks good in an outfit. ;-)

I thought this would be another camel chamois thread.
My daughter hides and tells her friends to run for the brain bleach when I sho up at school to collect her in my "baboon shorts" (my wife's name for riding shorts with a colorful chamois).

So, I am picturing black shorts with a red chamois. I am also picturing you wearing them so that anyone would refer to them as baboon shorts. Specifically, you I would think that you would have to be wearing them so that the chamois is showing. Is that the case? If so .... um... you might want to consult a professional.

Heh.......no.
My daughter and her cohort seem to have an alergy to lycra, no matter the utility. Somewhere ten or 15 years ago lycra became horribly unfashionable. Everything has to be low rise and baggy on guys. I think her tastes may change as soon as she starts noticing cute, lycra clad butts.....not that mine will ever reach those "heights" again.....
