Refinishing carbon components Proyect
 

I wanna stealth my seat post and bottle cages. The frame that had their color scheme was replaced with a matte black HTC frame. So now im gonna DIY!

My mechanic told me i should do this with a professional, cause his seen some sloppy work and my bike deserves better. :)

I've been interested in how people go about refinishing carbon parts, in for more:)

I was concerned about the final product. So i got some tips from a work friend that has a lot of experience painting cars motorcycles etc (hojalatero)
We went to a store and bought 600 and 1000 wet sanding paper. He pointed out that i didn't need to get completly under the finish unto the naked carbon, i just needed a smooth sanded surface since black satin finish would cover all.

I sanded but got weight weenie (pathetic) and descided to get the most finish off... When the part was wet i loved how the specialized naked carbon looked. But once dry it looked dull and ready for paint.


We bought R-M AM210 satin black spray can for $14.00 which is supposed to be a very durable paint. And since its satin black there's no need to clear over. I sort of wanted a matte carbon finish but read a lot about matte finish clear not being that durable. Converting glossy clear to matte being a bit more expensive, im thinking this satin black should rock!

Thoughts?

I'd try a 2000-40000 grit final sanding then try a satin clear coat so you can see the carbon and use the paint as a last resort if the transparent finish does turn out.

whered you get the paint?

bought at a specialized (not the bike brand ;) ) paint store, they sold everything to paint vehicles in general.

That's car grade paint, it will last. Did you put a non shiny clear over it??

Hope it does. But since its black a repaint isn't very hard. About gloss, no gloss, this paint has a bit of shine. I wanted a dryish look to it, hoped for less shine, but it looks pretty nice. Ill post a pic after i finish today.

The cages will need another spray, hopefully they will dry nicely before my ride.

Asking about the clear because clear will protect the paint you have in there.

If you really want the stealth look, when are you going to start in on the stem and frame?

Before the stem can be altered i need to be sure about fit. Its 100mm and im thinking 110mm would fit better. Since the stem is Deda M35, refinishing it would damage the resale, id be stuck with this stem

Maybe stealth is too much ;). This frame has a nice color scheme, yellow and green look very unique. Who'd be crazy enough to repaint an s-works? That would most likely void warranty.

You just made your bike heavier. Now you'll go slower on the hills, and if that's not aerodynamic paint, slower on the flats too. :D

The paint is called "AERO MAX" so i assume it's aerodynamic! :thumb:

You need to get some Praxis Works chainrings in black. The current ones stick out in a bad way. Good thing is it will look better but will also perform better too (and be lighter).
