Is "hey Lance" a compliment or an insult?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is "hey Lance" a compliment or an insult?

I've heard this one a few times from the sidelines. Are people calling me a poser, or are they saying "hey you look like you could win seven consecutive Tour de France victories"?

Could be either depending on the context and who's saying it.

I just respond back with "Hey, Jude." Then I ask them to take a sad song, make it better.

I can only assume it's a compliment since nobody has ever said it to me.

I was out riding one day during my chemo regimen. I'm this pale, hairless rat riding an old mountain bike really slowly, and feeling like if the chemo didn't kill me, the ride would. A couple guys passed me and I heard one say to the other (loud enough that I believe he wanted me to hear it) "Hey look. Lance shaves his legs!". I just smiled. In my case, it was most definitely an insult. I don't care. It was a beautiful New Year's day, I was outside, riding and every heartbeat felt like my heart was going to pound right out of my chest - reminding me I still had a pulse. I feel bad for the guy who said it, though. It must suck to be that insecure to have to make comments like that.

PhotoJoe, nice to hear that you're not letting jerks get you down. As to the OP, it's neither an insult or a compliment but it depends on who said it. It could be a stereotype of you as a cyclist, or synecdoche (figure of speech where one represents a group, so Lance represents all riders). So you happen to be an awesome rider, which would make it a compliment, or if you're Lance an insult because he's not like everybody....hahaha, the conundrum

I'm a pessimist, I usually hear it from a cager and naturally assume it mocking. #### 'em though, I don't care.

From most people, I'd assume that it is meant as an insult. However, in my point of view Lance was one of the greatest cyclists ever and Tour de France winner. Considering that, I always smile and consider it a compliment whether they intended it to be one or not.

Lance is the layperson's only connection to the cycling world. They called you Lance because they are ignorant.

Bingo. They don't even see the shaved legs---they see Spandex.

The one time I was called that, I was riding an ancient Schwinn LeTour with DT shifters, and tights.

I've had that yelled a few times, usually from teens in an over crowded car.

My favorite was when a car approaching from the rear slowed down. I sensed the driver was trying to equal my speed. This drew my attention to the driver, an attractive woman in a shiny, silver SL550. She was smiling and said, "nice a$$." I don't know if she meant it as a compliment or an insult, nor did I care. It made me laugh.

A driver asked me for directions once, and after I gave them, as she pulled away, she said "Thanks! You look like Lance Armstrong!" I took it as a compliment.

You should be going fast enough that you can't make out what people say because of the Doppler effect. This is the 41, after all.

Here's the version I heard:

"Hey Lance, nice shorts fat***. Who do you think you are queerbait?"

It didn't sound very nice.
