I switched from MTB to road 6 years ago when my MTB was stolen out of my garage while we were on a trip. I still get pissed when I think about it. I've put together two roadbikes since that fateful day and finally re-added an MTB to the stable again two years ago.
I mostly added the MTB back in because a good friend of mine rides MTB sometimes and it gives me the opportunity to ride with him. Haven't been on it in several months at this point though as I'm thoroughly committed to the road right now. |
I got an MTB free cuz some college student graduated from Harvard and tossed his in the trash. I used that for a while but then, not riding dirt trails or antything figured I'd try hybrid to go faster on my commute, but that was a mistake and eventually got a road bike. It took longer than it should have cuz I tried to rodify the MTB and hybrid, but nothing beats a road bike for road riding! ;)

I still ride both, but I switched from primarily riding mountain to riding road. The reason is because of my wife and kids. My wife prefers road riding, and it is easier to ride on the paved MUPs with the kids than the technical singletrack that is all over around here. If I had it my way, we would be riding more mountain than road. I have to say that I do enjoy road riding though, and it is nice to be able to get on the bike and go rather than having to drive somewhere first. I ride more frequently because of that.

Mountain biking is great - flowing on single track is an incredible feeling. That said - access to great trails is not easy and you have drive to get there. Since my wife and I had a baby, she no longer rides - which makes mountain biking less enjoyable for me. I started road cycling for fitness and learned to love the speed and rhythm of it.

I ride road bikes, because I can do that from my front door. The mountains involve a drive. I'll probably get a mountain bike, though.

Well I'm essentially a MTB to Road convert... here's my post on the what road bike thread:

Greetings, all!
I'm pretty new to cycling... more of a runner, but after a spade of injuries, I took to cycling to keep active while I recovered. My ride was a heavy $199 Supercycle mountain bike from Canadian Tire. As I rode up and down the back roads near me, I realized I enjoyed cycling! Noticed lots of other cyclists on my routes, as well. The good thing is the bike was tough and I could ride through any road/terrain. However, I quickly realized the limitations of my Supercycle... gear shifting was iffy and noisy, bike was loud, seat hurt my behind, handle bars were uncomfortable for anything longer than 10 mins, handling was like steering a bus, and I noticed the other cyclists weren't waving to me. Anyways, I figured it was time to swap out the beast and increase my cycling longevity. Spent a few days on this awesome site, then visited a few LBS's. Two picked up this bike two days ago: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8012/7...1f862de4_z.jpg Went for a 70 km ride yesterday and pretty much all the deficiencies of my MTB have been addressed, other cyclists even started waving to me! I'm on the hunt now for pedals and shoes! |
I started riding a couple of years ago just to get some exercise and that was on an old walmart mtb because it was already in the garage. My wife and I bought them because we thought we were going to pedal around the neighborhood together and it just never happened. Mountain biking is not really an option here in Lower Alabama since there's nothing but swamp everywhere, and I haven't seen a swamp bike or trails to ride one on yet.
After a few weeks plodding around on the junk MTB that was laying around in the garage I bought a cheap ill fitting road bike that I'm still riding. I'm trying desperately to upgrade but haven't done it yet. |
Switch? Can't you do both? If I have to pick one (and I do, I haven't had a mountain bike for about three years, and probably won't for another year or two), I pick road, because I can get out the door and go. That means more riding. But mountain biking is huge fun, and I miss it.

I do both, and just enjoy the ability to loose my self while riding. Road bike or mountain bike nothing else matters but what is right in front of you. Although, I do prefer to keep the road bike on the trainer because of all people doing everything but driving.

I was riding dirt bikes as a kid. Eventually got a blue light special 10 speed in Jr High but it was only a bike to get around the neighborhood. Never got "serious" until college, when my roommates and I got into MTBing. Did that for about a decade, but then we all slowly got jobs, married, and had kids. We used to ride on some fairly technical singletrack so riding MTB solo was out of the question. Since none of our schedules synced, i didnt ride anything for several years and just focused on work. Then I realized I needed some level of activity or else Id turn into a fat slug. A near-heart-attack drove this home. I picked up running. Quickly remembered I hated it. Rediscovered cycling, but given I couldnt MTB solo, I got into road riding. That was 7 years ago now. And its been great ever since.
My old buddies and I do get together to ride the trails about once a year. |
There's no reason one has to favor one over the other. I enjoy both.
|
When my friends discovered and got into BMX I was riding a road bike and was off roading on old cruisers before the modern mountain bike was invented and then embraced off road riding to the near exclusion of road cycling for some years.
After I fragged my back off roading was too painful and it is only this spring that I have been spending a little more time in the dirt and am loving it. |
I enjoy both but living just south of Houston there isnt really to many trails to ride so its all road. I do however pack up the mtb when i load up the family for a camping adventure.

Started on a BMX in the early/mid 80's, that got me through most of my childhood.(still have her too)
Got a MTB in my early teens(department store special), rode that thing maybe twice. Highschool years pretty much gave up cycling, got into MTB's again after graduation. Rode for a few years, but past injuries caught up with me, bad knees,& back. Had to give up the beautiful mountains of B.C. to heal up :( ( still have my stumpy for bad winters) I messed around with fixies/as last summer,& it got me into riding shape Found my love for biking again, thought about a hybrid, but got a sweet deal on a CX (2008 Kona JTS). I commuted to work on her, & she got me riding with my current group of roadies. Just love the feel of the dropbars, speed,& tight handling. Picked up another CX to add to my collection, I really wanted one with disc brakes. Got a 2011 Opus Senteiro on a trade with my cousin for a Trek 1.2, I needed something more commuter friendly @ the time. Slowly built her up to where she is now. She keeps me near/@ the front in our group. 2012 I'm building my 1st road bike from frameset up, my buddies talked me into taking this much needed step. I picked up a classic steel road bike the other day, & have a carbon frame in the works too. I love my "Stumpy" but I find she gets neglected, she'll go to a great home, & fund my carbon build. My fixed/track bike, & polo(Kona Unit) bike will be sold to fund the carbon build too. Figure 1 of my CX can double as a winter bike. That's my BF timeline. :D |
I ride mostly all road bikes although bought a new BMC TE-01 full XO a few months back and have only been on it once.
Nice to have. |
I have been a roadie for ever but also enjoy my mountain bike. I get a better work out on the road bike, no questions asked. If given the choice of pulling one bike down or the the other, it will 9 out of 10 times be one of the road bikes. I like the speed and all that goes with it. But I also go through phases when I find that I love mountain biking, typically in the forest in the fall, late fall, winter and early spring. I have mountain biked since 1982 when I owned a hard tail and no front suspension Fisher/Ritchey Montare with friction 7 speed, solid axles, and rat trap pedals. Obviously the two are radically different but both are on bikes. Like cross country skiing v down hill skiing.

I was a tri-athlete in my twenties then bought a mountain bike at 35 after a few years off the bike.I started doing enduros then bought a roadie 3 years ago to assist with the endurance. Now I spend 90% of my time on the roadie, but I still race the mountain bike. However I will turn 50 next year and am thinking of having a dip on the road bike front.I still consider myself a mountain biker, the rush of flowing singletrack takes you back to childhood.

Both here. I prefer mountain with the exception of crits. The occasional long road ride is great, but if given the choice it's mountain every time :)

I started off with mountain biking a long time ago to help me quit smoking. I did cross-country racing for years. Then as a began to get older and I started realizing that bones don't heal as fast as they used to, I started eyeing the road bikes. One day I finally broke down and test rode one at my LBS. I felt like I was on a farrari compared to my mountain bike station wagon. Now I'm hooked. I still have my (old) mountain bike for when I get that occasional itch to hit some (mild) trails, but I pretty well consider myself a roadie now. (Something I never thought I'd hear myself say 13 years ago!)
