Riding After Vasectomy??
 

To anyone that has had a vasectomy, how long did you all wait to ride? Thanks.

I think it was 10 days for me. No pain at all.

It depends on how fast you heal. I would estimate 2-3 weeks.

But go by what your doctor says.

P.S. Kinda late for you, but I advise my cyclist patients to get this done in January or February.

Next day. The most comfortable thing you can wear after is actually bib shorts. This assumes you get the modern No Scalpel method; there's nothing you can do to hurt it afterwards, and you're free to go do any activity that you want to. But you might not want to if you're really sore! It's about a 1/2hr procedure, start to finish.

Depends on the person. Ive known guys that went back to work that day and didnt have any issues at all. I, on the other hand, was swollen and bruised for almost a week, couldnt even walk right for 3 days

On the advice of my doctor, I waited a week. Even then, getting back on was not comfortable and it hurt everytime I hit a bump for about a month or so. It was probably over 6 weeks before it felt normal enough to not be something I thought about with pretty much every move. Now 5 months later I still get a little twinge now and then. Your mileage may vary.

There isn't a one size fits all answer to your question. The procedure affects our bodies differently. I didn't experience much pain at all in healing, but it looked like Mike Tyson punched the left side of my bag. Others report discomfort but no bruising. Some both, and some neither. At any rate, if the no-scalpel method is used on you, it would be very unlikely that you wouldn't be comfortably back in the saddle after a max of two weeks, and likely much less than that.

3days and was out on 16 mile mtb ride,wore a jock under cycling shorts, did change a tire for the person next door 3hrs after which wasn't much fun

I'm not posititve cuz he kind of said it under his breath, but it sounded like "Damn, I gotta take you camping sometime."

I thought that was a little weird, but when he kissed me goodbye it made more sense.

This past weekend I rode 45 miles and 3800 vertical feet with a guy that had a vasectomy ten days earlier. It was his first ride since the vasectomy and he said he had been completely pain free for only one day.

After about 20 minutes, he started complaining about "discomfort". It must have gone away, because he stopped complaining.

I wish there had been a "no scalpel method" back in my day.

I had mine done in the winter....on the trainer 2 days later no problems.

But as others have said, totally depends on the person and how they recover from the procedure.

Had mine done on a Friday. Rode (easily) to work and back on Monday.

I had virtually no pain, aches, or swelling and resumed all activities within a few days. That said, I've known guys that had it nowhere near as easy and were out of commission for a couple of weeks with serious pain and aching. FWIW, I would advise taking it easy and gradually increasing activity level evaluating the effects as you go.

Following the doc's advice: I broke my collar bone in a race a couple of months ago. The first doc said stay off the bike for 8-12 weeks. I saw a second doc and he said I should resume riding immediately as much as was reasonably tolerable. The first was a general orthopedic surgeon, the second an orthopedic surgeon that specialized in sports medicine.

This topic makes me really glad my wife is on the pill and never screws it up. A friend who had a vasectomy back in the scalpel days said it felt like being kicked in the nuts for 3 days.

I'll take the 2 minutes of pain where I almost passed out when the doc tucked on my strings to snip them, instead of having my wife deal with the side effects for years from taking the pill.

My wife has no side effects nor has anyone else I've previously been involved with. :thumb:

A possible exception would be the ex-girlfriend who is the mother of my 5 year-old. I don't think pregnancy is a side effect though.. :lol: it's a natural consequence of forgetting or intentionally not taking the pill.

Anyway, bravo to the guy riding 40 miles after pain 20 minutes in. Now that's HTFU.

You might want to read up on Chronic Testicular Pain, or Post-Vasectomy Pain Syndrome. Not a ton of statistics, but estimates of about 2-4%. From first hand experience, it is unpleasant.

Seventh day 2hrs on the trainer
Eighth day pre-rode course for a cyclocross race for 2 hrs
Tenth day cyclocross race

I waited until I was pain/discomfort free for an entire day and rode the day after. Never had any issues.

I actually rode my bike to the hospital to have it done and then rode the bike home. This was about 11 years ago and the doc used the "scalpel method" (not kidding). He must have done a good job because there was no pain whatsoever and I went back to my usual cycling routine the next day.
