Prescription sun glasses... again (sorry)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Prescription sun glasses... again (sorry)

I've done a search and found a few, but when I tried them at the store the prescription insert was too close to my eyes and the eyelashes kept touching them and it was very annoying. And no, i'm not going to cut my eyelashes.

I rather not spend big bucks but understand i'll have to spend a few hundred.

Os if anyone has and specific suggestions, please post them and if you have a link, that would be great.

Those inserts really suck...it does not take into account the distance that is going to be reduced when it is actually "inserted" on to the back of the lenses closest to your eyes. Even worse when you have no bridge or a relatively flat face. Sawfly and Oakley have the Asian fit prescription sunglasses which I had to have custom made due to the nature of my former job and they were friggin' awesome. They were not cheap, but if you have been wearing prescriptions for a while they are worth it.

I would like to slap the non-prescription wearing dooshbug who designed the prescription inserts for wrap around sunglasses.

You really have to go with straight prescription sunglasses to avoid any of that.

I got some goggles (with annoying eyelash-touching prescription insert) from Zenni Optical online. Cost: $45. They did weird things to my depth perception, but I ultimately got used to them. Did I mention they only cost $45?

"Sports glasses" with prescription clip-ins are not the only choice. Many eyeglass frames can be fitted with prescription sunglass lenses. I use Oakley Romeos (predecessors to the Juliets) with prescription Iridium lenses. They're not cheap but the frames are bomb-proof (metal). Before that I had Oakley M-frames with the prescription lenses set directly into the wraparound shield; however, the M-frames had a habit of cracking about yearly, as did the wraparound. No doubt there are other brands which can be fitted with prescription sunglass lenses too.

Ordered a pair from Sportsoptical.com 2 weeks ago. Waiting for it. I basically had issues with the curvature of lens giving me headache with my level of prescription on some places I tried... this place is supposed to do special things with lens to give more even/better coverage. We shall see.

New cycling trend - shaving eyelashes. Also good for .04Watts from weight savings and aero effect.

At the suggestion of my son and the LBS I contacted Rudy Project about their sport sunglasses with RX insert. I explained the issues I had and that I needed a very low profile insert. They recommended the metal insert and said the only way to be sure they are OK is try them. Since there isn't a local dealer I was told I can buy them online and if I need to I can return them for a full refund (as long as I don't get prescription lenses installed). They also qualified for free next day shipping so all i'll be out is $7 to return them.

He'll i'll give them a try since i'll spend more than $7 in gas running from store to store trying on different glasses.

If that insert doesn't work check your local Wal-Mart to see if they have a Wal-Mart Vision Center in the store (some stores have contracted Optical vendors, not WM corporate).

We get our precription eyewear for work there and whe I was in, I noticed they had a new line of Rx Sport Glasses. A few of the styles definitely looked like they would work on the bike. They were fitting a pair to a Harley dude, some styles have the 'biker' look. Price was extremely reasonable from what I saw.
Good luck, let us know how it works out.

I buckeld down and bought a Rudy Project Rx pair from Sport Optical, with 2 sets of interchangable lenses. Not cheap, but worth it to be seeing clearly on the bike without issues. (Oh, except I can't read my computer... next step, bifocal Rx lenses... LOL)

Goto Eyemasters, look at their oakleys / sun glasses.

Have them build them with your RX... That's what I did with mine.

They were slightly more expensive, and had to be shipped to Oakley for them to mill the lenses, and construct them... But they fit just like my normal glasses and give me good sun protection for my eyes.

I got them this afternoon.. now that's service.

The insert is very low profile and fits snugly against the sun glass lenses. It's maybe 2-3mm thick and doesn't touch my eyelashes. Prescription lenses cost me $72. The sun glass lenses are polycarbonate so the prescription lenses don't need to be.

^^^This. I hate my glasses with inserts.

OTOH, they cost 1/10th what my Rx Rudy Projects cost. Seriously: 1/10th.

My problem I that I wear tri-focul glasses. For riding I would like the same but would settle for bi-focul. This pretty much eliminates wrap arounds.

I have separate distance and reading because bi-focals just don't work for me. So i'm getting the insert for the sunglasses in my distance prescription. I carry my reading glasses in my back pocket.

The Rudy insert can hold progressive lenses.

I just ride in my Rayban Wayfarers, I had prescription lenses put in them a while back. Not exactly the 'right' bike look but they're dual purpose - casual, and riding.

Believe it or not, I have actually trimmed my eye lashes so that they would not touch the prescription inserts on my sunglasses.

To the OP, are your eyes healthy enough to wear contact lenses? You may want to consider that because using inserts may make you feel giddy, due to the difference in curvature of the sunglass lens and the prescription lens. Get your eyes checked, and if they're healthy enough, go with contact lenses, at least only for riding.

I made the switch and couldn't be much more happier.

Theres many frames available for optical use for sunglasses. Also most good sunglasses that are not rx can be used for rx lenses.

I have a few pair of sunglasses that are standard optical frames that have rx sunglasses installed.

It seems as if the original poster is intent on getting special athletic or biking use sunglasses with rx lens inserts. That's an option but i just use general optical frames with rx sunglasses installed from opticians.

I have a couple that are polarized lenses and a couple that are old-school tinted, non polarized. There's a couple of reasons i got non polarized lenses on a couple of pairs (1) i wanted to save money and (2) I wanted special tints. With one, I wanted a lighter grey tint than the darker tint of the polarized rx lenses. With the other i wanted to match the color tint on a pair of vintage nonrx sunglasses i got at a thrift store. A good optician can match to any tint.

With rx polarized lenses, usually you have a choice of brown or grey tint, in a standard sunglass level of darknesss. A green/grey tint (often referred to as g15) is commonly available but not for my rx and type of lens I generally want. If i want the g15 tint i can either get it tinted by my optician in a nonpolarized lens or i can order a polarized grey lens and have my optician add green tint to it.

i tried Transition lenses (that change from clear to sunglass tint) but i didnt like them because they dont work inside a car, the windshield blocks uv rays so the lenses of the glasses dont darken because they are uv activated. On a bike they work fine.

Another option is clip on non rx sunglass lenses that go on rx lensed frames. Most optical frames dont have matching specialized clip on sunglasses available but for about $80 to $100 you can get custom made very high quality nonrx clip lenses made to match almost any optical frame, your optician can order it from one of the suppliers. They ship the optical frame out to get the custom clip on frame made to match. What i have done is collected a few 1980's model optical frames that had matching clip ons available for them, because i got one of these in the 1980s and liked it, so i got new old ones of this frame with clip ons. But i dont like to use the clip ons because the frame plus clip ons is heavier, and taking them on and off can lead to scratching of lenses and wear and tear on the frames. So i have learned i prefer to buy separate frames with clear lenses and separate frames with tinted lenses. It costs a lot more but it is preferable for me. It is a lot easier to switch glasses when going in and out of doors than taking on and putting off clip ons all of the time. And it saves the wear and tear and scratches on the lenses and is more comfortable.

Adidas Evil Eye also is an option with Rx Insert. I have not bought them but scrutinized them carefully and they seem technically similar but superior to Oakley M-frames, albeit the insert sits behind the sun lenses. Also the circumference of the insert lens is small, so a small field of view, however likely to take a strong correction for the same reason.
