Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Easton EC90 SLX any good? Search failed

Was looking at buying a Easton EC90 SLX fork new in box for $200. Would this be a quality piece? Or should i run and stay away from it?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Very light fork. A friend of mine says he thinks it's actually TOO light, to the point where it affects the handling and feel. (He has one).

For what it's worth, I don't think Easton even makes that model anymore. I think the SL is now their lightest offering, and if a cycling company quits making their LIGHTEST product, that usually a sign.

How much do you weight? If you're a lighter rider none of this may be a concern.

Thanks, I may avoid this fork then. I read mixed reviews on road bike review, I am not a lightweight. I don't do any descending in Florida though and that is where many of the issues had arisen.

As I understand it there have been two "generations" of the EC90 SLX. The first one was about 295 g and very wimpy. That has been replaced with the ITT version (internal thread technology) which beefs up the steerer tube quite a bit. Maybe also some reinforcements to the blades. Now it weighs about 350g. Big difference. I have had the new version and a Ritchey Pro on the same frame and they rode essentially identically (just not at the same time ). Just about the same weight, too, so you can choose either and do just as well depending upon price. I don't think you want to pay quite that much for it if you can help it. Just make sure to get the new type, usually specified in ebay listings. Is it still being made, don't know, but the two generations might be where the confusion is.

Oh, and another source of confusion is that sellers often advertise the new fork with the old weight. I wonder why they would do that! Anyway, go by the ITT name, not the weight when you are searching to buy.

No mention of ITT technology, which seems to be something Easton brags about. I will look elsewhere.
Thanks for the help.

Was also looking at Control Tech lightning. Similar price and weight. Maybe similar problems?

Look at the Ritchey WCS. ~ 300gms uncut, favorable reviews and is in the same after market $ range as the Easton ECs and Ouzo Pros.

The Ritchey Pro is hard to beat. Full carbon except the dropouts. Not as pricey as the WCS model and very nearly as light. I have two of them and absolutely no complaints. Often good deals on ebay.

Oh, and you can certainly look for an ITT Easton fork. There are always plenty of them on ebay.

If your talking about the one Cambria is selling, I bought one a couple of months ago. It is not the ITT version so its probably a 2008-09 model. It does not have the bear trap style pretensioner that has gotten the bad press. Its more of a compression style. I think it weighed about 330 grams uncut but I don't remember exactly. I live in a very hilly area and I have not noticed any excessive flex while climbing. So far its been fine for me. Total riding weight is just under 200 pounds with rider, bike, water bottles and change kit.

That's the one, I did read all the bear trap stories. I may still go with the Ritchey.

I have one that came stock on a 2010 BMC. It's a noodle. Very flexy. I'll never buy another. FWIW, I weigh 145 pounds.

I recently put one on my Lynskey R330. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of different models, and I's sure, after reading this thread, that mine is an older one. Mine weighs around 310 grams, uncut - and it is a total wimp. I'm only 125lbs, but it's really noodley when I stand on hills. I think I'm going to replace it. It makes me nervous.
