Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2012 Cycling - Road Race Championships Cat V

Either I'm going to hammer it out for 36 miles and do work or I'm going to blow up in a blaze of glory....either way I'm excited.

I've read it a good while back, I'm pretty sure I'm ready for the race itself...I'm just worried about the other riders and them crashing me, other than that, I think I can do pretty good.

I do that every Tuesday at a local crit series; it's great fun! Enjoy it, and keep going back for more... it's great fun

I'm doing my first one on the 14th. Memphis Invitational Club Championship Crit. 45 minutes long.

My goals:
1. Don't crash
2. Don't cause anyone else to crash
3. Learn
4.finish with the pack.

I'm doing my first one of the 8th. It's a "D" shape crit. Hopefully I won't break my collarbone.

This is the legacy of BikeForums. Hasn't done a race yet but need purpose built crit and road racing bikes.

Good luck on your first one. Get out there and have fun.

^I have no idea if I'm ready or not but I figure the only way to know is to do it. If nothing else it will tell me how much work I have to do.

I sure won't be taking an 8k carbon bike out there...I'd much rather crash on something that cost me <600

Didn't mean to suggest that you weren't. but there is still good advice in there.

I'm by no means ready...but I am thinking where I'm at now might be the strongest I'll be all year. I start work next month which means my weekends are gone and my riding will decrease...it's a good time for me to get my first race out of the way.

There are just as many crashes in road races as there are in crits except typically the road race crashes are far worse. most crit crashes are slide outs in corners. It's a myth and it really needs to be dispelled. You don't need a crit bike. But good luck anyway.

Have fun. Since it's your first try not to get dropped. BTW - you don't need a special crit bike to race crits.

Not that I've been to all that many, compared to a lot of other people here, but I've only ever witnessed one wreck in a crit. And it was actually after the end of the cat 4/5 race, on the cool down lap. And that particular race included a car that decided to drive through the course, in the opposite direction form the riders...

crits tend to be tighter and closer...everything I've heard from other crit racers and from reading, says crits are more likely to have crashes. I understand road races have crashes too, especially in the cat 5's, but I'll take my chances in the road race and my (hopeful) ability to pull away from the squirmy guys. I'm comfortable elbow to elbow in a sprint or any other tight mass but its the others I'm worried about.

I'm a firm believer in taking care of/being aware of your own sphere around the bike - give yourself an out and try to make each situation be one that you can control. Dumb luck happens, but I think that you make your own luck too. Guard that wheel, and keep your line.
