any machinists, fabricators, skillee tradesmen here?
Just wondering if anyone here has user any of there skills and know how to modify there bike. I am a machinists, welder, and have experience in fabrication. I have always made my own parts as well as modified the existing parts for my race cars, motorcycles, etc. And now I am looking at my bike and noticed a few things I could do some machining to.
I am half way done with my pedals I am making from scratch. Nothing special, but very different from what you normally see. And I was also looking at the cheapo crank that came on my bike. I was thinking about removing excess material from the crank to lighten it up and make it look a little more custom. mainly the arms.
Has anyone else here done any machining/fab work to there bikes?

I'd like to see pics of your pedals as well. I've made small parts for most of my bikes (cable ends, FD clamp adaptors, chain catchers) but nothing as complex as pedals.
I'd be leery of removing much material from a crank. If it breaks you could be in a lot of pain.

I have a machining / fabrication background and work as a frame builder, bicycle mechanic, and wheel builder... we could fabricate nearly anything here although the investment in time and materials has to be weighed against what is currently available.
The best way to get a lighter crank is to buy a lighter crankset... trying to mill and machine a second rate crank to make it lighter will make it weaker and open up the potential for failure and at the end, a better quality crank set will already be lighter and stronger.
In the old days a lot of people did a lot of drilling (drillium) and milling to lighten parts but it always came with a risk that the lighter parts would be more prone to failure so the tendency was to start with the best parts possible.
I am interested in seeing the custom pedals... we make custom hubs and could see a pedal designed in a similar manner that would be smooth and solid although as a one off would be a rather pricey item.
