The UNofficial Tour de France Thread (no spoilers)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sorry Cbad. It wasn't meant as a spoiler.

I do like seeing (that particular rider) perform though.

+1 And to think, I thought this year might be a bit of a downer with some riders choosing to "focus on the Olympics."

If anything, it's made this year more exciting. Especially with the introduction of a new major player on said former rider's terrain.

damn its hard to discuss the tour when you can't actually discuss the tour . basically mentioning anything that occurs in the day's stage can be construed as a spoiler...so for future reference just write: "some guys rode their bikes, one guy won, some people might have crashed, or they might not."

I agree! Won't be back to this thread--it's completely pointless. Watch the stage on your DVR then talk about it! If ya' don't want to be spoiled, don't read the comments until after you've viewed.

As you know, Sean, all everyone has to do is click on the Pro Cycling forum. A thread for every stage, no worries about spoilers, everything fine. Obviously they can't allow spoilers in every forum, or people who don't want to know the result couldn't use the site until after they had watched the recording - they'd risk stumbling on information they don't want.

The relevant threads in pro cycling are two clicks of a mouse away. Too complicated for some?

Is it ok to talk about stages like 2 days ago? If you aren't up to date on things 2 days past maybe you should pretend to like another sport, right?

How about Stage 3 after Stage 4 has finished?

The idea of having a thread dedicated to something other than who wins the stage, or who dies is nice... but it really is way to easy to create a "spoiler."

BTW, did anyone see that picture of George Hincapie's leg? Veins look like a mole burrowed in there.

Anyone else ride their trainer while watching Le Tour? I find it exceptionally demoralizing when they reach 40mph and at full gas on my trainer I can barely hit 28. (no power meter... but 175h.r. at 85 cadence)... yet every day I get on the trainer at the 100km mark and start spinning.

It's not complicated but some of us only post in this forum. It'd be just as easy to have a spoilers thread here with a warning so that those who haven't watched the most recent stage can just stay out. I'm wondering what North Americans do at work round the water cooler during the TDF...talk about the weather? Of course I know its easy for me being in Taiwan; the time difference means we get to watch each stage live from 8 pm to midnight every night....sweet!

Yes, it is perfectly fine. Just don't post the winner of the day's stage.

In the past, we've kept TdF threads in the Pro forum as chasm54 alludes to. This was b/c these threads descend into doping or drama over spoilers. We decided to change that last year. Can the experiment survive?

Many tactical/strategic and otherwise relevant discussions are possible w/o divulging the winner of the day's stage.

Why? The whole point of the site, and one of its best features, is that it is organised by subject. That's the only way to do it if you want the discussions to be interesting and, usually, informed. One of the reasons the 41 is such a PITA a lot of the time is that people use it for everything, whether or not it is road-cycling specific. It takes no time at all to move between forums and massively increase the chance that you might run into a few people who actually know what they are talking about.

this is true but you are missing one important aspect. you start identifying with a certain sub-forum. Every large forum i've frequented has it's own set of 'regulars' on different sub-forums. What happens is that there will be duplicate discussions on different sub-forums because people want to converse about a topic with the people they have come to know, who they identify with. They want to discuss something amongst themselves, and not discuss it with people in another sub-forum.

EDIT: just like every sub-forum develops their own style. There is a distinct vibe between different sub-forums generally.

Sure, I've been around enough forums to see this happen frequently. But you can't expect the mods to simply allow everything to be discussed in every forum, or the distinction between forums would dissolve and they would become useless as sources of advice or information.

Also, those who talk to the same people all the time very quickly stop learning anything new while paradoxically becoming convinced that they know everything. They need to get out more.

my question is, why in the world with a sprinter like Cavendish, why isn't team sky providing a leadout train at the end of the stages to catapult him to the finish? He's like a man riding alone out there........... What's up with that?

^ Probably because they're going for the overall win via Bradley Wiggins. Can't split the team over both riders.

Gotta protect wiggo. If wiggo fails to capture the yellow in the mountain stages you can bet you'll see more support thrown to cav later. Cav understands his role, and he's not mad, he just knows he's on his own

ditto. Anyone have suggestions on an app that tracks standings? There was a great (and free) one last year, but all the ones I've tried this year are crap and don't have standings or break downs on each stage!

yeah but, nah but, the pro cycling forum only has about 8 regular posters. the 41 has many more. if i post over in pro cycling I gotta wait till y'all get out of bed to get a response. anyway my specific point is that this thread doesn't need to be non-spoiler. if you haven't seen the day's stage don't come in here. outside of this thread i completely understand we stay mum on the previous day's shenanigans.

Sure. But just to state the obvious, if all those who were interested in the Tour had the sense to post in the threads created to cover the Tour, that issue would not arise. It's not as if it's somehow more difficult to post in pro cycling...
